Football - Valley Heights vs Onaga 09/08/2023 7:00 PM

You wouldn’t have guessed a blowout was in the cards if you only watched the first quarter. Valley Heights scored the first touchdown of the game with Valley Heights quarterback Carson Spoonts scoring from the 12-yard line.

Onaga responded with a solid drive that started from midfield after recovering an onside kick. Senior running back Rayce Fisher broke off for an 18-yard run and junior quarterback Jackson Kolterman got a large gain of 21 yards.

That put the Buffaloes at the five-yard line with a 4th & 2, but the Mustangs’ defense turned them away.

Deep in their own territory, Valley Heights was able to score on a 71-yard passing touchdown from Spoonts to junior scatback Logan Gray.

With the Mustangs up 16-0 with 11:25 left in the second quarter, the turning point of game occurred on the ensuing kickoff. Spoonts kicked it past a Buffalo and into a dead zone around the 30-yard line with no one from the Onaga able to recover before Valley Heights dove on it.

With momentum already on their side, the Mustangs took the game over with the next drive resulting in a 17-yard rushing touchdown again by Spoonts.

After Onaga was forced to punt on their next drive, junior running back Jayden DeWalt found the endzone for the first time this season on a 29-yard scamper to go up 32-0.

Junior linebacker Royce Ekstrum snared an interception for the second straight week as he returned it 44 yards to the one-yard line.

Senior fullback Kaison Bigham got his first score of the season one play later making it 40-0 at halftime.

The Mustangs eased off the gas a bit in the second half, but DeWalt got his second touchdown of the day.

Before the game finalized, both Fisher and Kolterman had rushing touchdowns.

DeWalt got seven carries in the win which were good for 51 yards with his two touchdowns. Gray had three receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown along with three carries for 47 yards.

Spoonts was great all night both on the ground and over the air. He finished 4-for-5 with 100 yards passing and a touchdown with 100 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns.
