The Axtell Eagles (6-Seed) took on the Onaga Buffaloes (11-seed) in the first round of girl TVL tournament play on Saturday morning, with the winner moving on to take on the Valley Heights Mustangs. Axtell dominated the match-up and won 49-34 after dominating the second quarter leap to help propel to the victory.

The first quarter was tight with Axtell squeezing out the lead 10-7 over Onaga at the end of the first. It was arguably one of the best quarters of the season by Onaga, with solid offensive sets being executed and a low amount of turnovers. However, Axtell would shortly change their tempo by coming out into the second quarter with intensity on defense, coming away with five steals in just two minutes. Katelyn Detweiler had three of the steals and scored five points total off the turnovers. Detweiler would finish the third quarter with seven steals and fifteen points with two threes. Axtell outscored Onaga 23-7 in the second quarter and had a dominating lead of 33-14 going into the half.

Axtell and Onaga would play a very quiet third quarter with not much to record on the stat sheet, with about the same to be said for the fourth quarter. Axtell put up eight points in both the third and fourth quarter, being outscored in the second half 20-16, but the large lead at the half helped set the Eagles in cruise control to take the breezy victory.

Regan Hasenkamp finished with 14 points in the game, with 12 in the first half for Axtell, while Maggie Strathman ended the game with 15 total points, being the primary scorer in the second half with 11. Katelyn Detweiler led Axtell with 16 points and 12 steals, having a phenomenal night on defense and offense for the Eagles, nailing two threes in the second as well. Axtell finished with over twenty rebounds and 17 steals. Abbie Ringel led Onaga in scoring with twelve points and four rebounds.

Axtell will now face Valley Heights on Monday at 3:15 PM. Onaga will take on Frankfort girls at 4:30 PM on Thursday next week on the consolation side of the bracket.
