The Jackson Heights boys basketball team continued its strong stretch of play Friday night, winning its third consecutive game with a 57–32 road victory over Horton to open Northeast Kansas League action.
The Cobras set the tone early, scoring the first nine points of the game and building momentum on both ends of the floor. Jackson Heights carried a 14–8 advantage into the end of the first quarter, using defensive pressure to keep the Chargers from finding any offensive rhythm.
Scoring was hard to come by for both teams in the second quarter, as defenses controlled much of the action. Despite the low-scoring stretch, the Cobras were able to add to their lead and went into the locker room ahead 24–13 at halftime.
Jackson Heights pulled away in the second half, outscoring Horton 33–19 over the final two quarters. The Cobras gradually extended the margin with balanced scoring and strong rebounding, turning the game into a convincing league-opening win.
Sophomore Devyn Montgomery led the way for Jackson Heights, turning in a career performance with 23 points and seven rebounds. Montgomery’s effort earned him KNZA Player of the Game honors. Drake Mellies also provided a strong all-around contribution with 11 points and five rebounds, while Austin Zeller chipped in 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Horton was led offensively by Javon Kahbeah, who scored 10 points off the bench. Wyatt Chartier added eight points, and Cooper Strube finished with seven points. Talon Hooper contributed four points but made a major impact on the boards, grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds for the Chargers.
With the win, Jackson Heights improves to 5–2 overall and 1–0 in Northeast Kansas League play, while Horton drops to 0–7 on the season and 0–1 in conference action.
