The Horton girls basketball team opened Northeast Kansas League play in impressive fashion Friday night, rolling to a 67–33 victory over Jackson Heights on their home floor.
The Chargers came out sharp from the opening tip, using balanced scoring and strong defense to build a 19–12 lead by the end of the first quarter. Horton continued to control the pace in the second quarter, extending the advantage to 29–18 by halftime as the Cobras struggled to find consistent offense.
Horton put the game out of reach after the break, dominating both ends of the floor in the second half. The Chargers outscored Jackson Heights 38–15 over the final two quarters, including a decisive 16–4 edge in the fourth quarter to close out the win.
Kansas Keo led the way for Horton and was named the KNZA Player of the Game after pouring in a game-high 26 points. Keo was supported by Tiffin Lanter, who finished with nine points, while Marlysa Banks and Kirsten Smith each added eight points to round out the balanced scoring effort.
The Chargers were effective from the perimeter all night, knocking down 10 three-pointers, and controlled the boards with a 26–15 rebounding advantage. Horton’s defensive pressure also limited Jackson Heights to just 15 points in the second half.
Jackson Heights was led in scoring by Chesnea Cochren with eight points. Brynn Shupe and Nicole Amon each contributed seven points for the Cobras, who saw their record fall to 5–2 overall and 0–1 in league play.
With the win, Horton improves to 4–3 on the season and 1–0 in Northeast Kansas League action, picking up an early conference victory and building momentum heading deeper into league play.
