The #6 seeded Valley Heights Mustangs went 2-1 in pool play today to move on to tomorrow. The Mustangs battled in a tough Pool B in pool play amongst team likes #2 Ellinwood, #3 Sedgwick, and the #7 seeded Doniphan West Mustangs.
Valley Heights was the first game to start the day at 8:30 and got things going with a bang. The Mustangs were down 19-14 to start their very first set but would go on to score 11 straight points and win set one against Sedgwick 25-19. The Mustangs would secure set two fairly easily with a 25-17 finish over the Cardinals.
Valley Heights then took a two-hour break, continuing play at 11:30 AM, where they would play back-to-back games. The Mustangs lost 2-0 in sets against Ellinwood: 25-17, 25-20. Despite the loss, the Mustangs were the only team that gave the Eagles a real run for their money out of the rest of the teams in Pool B.
Valley Heights would secure the final game they played in the pool 2-0 over Doniphan West. Winning the sets 25-17 and 25-15, they were swift and decisive victories for Valley Heights.
Leading the Mustangs in kills today was none other than Ava Smith. Smith is just a junior but had an incredible performance with 40 total kills today. The junior had 11 kills in her first game against Sedgwick, 15 kills against Ellinwood, and a stunning amount of 14 against Doniphan West. Of course, you can’t forget Mia Vermetten’s performance of 8 kills alongside eight as well from Anna Toeber (STATS NOT APPROXIMATE).
Both semi-finals will be played tomorrow at 9:00 AM, with Valley Heights taking on Inman and Ellinwood taking on Maranatha Academy. Winners will go to the state championship; losers will play in the third-place game roughly twenty-five minutes after the last semi-final game concludes.
