The Doniphan West Mustangs go home early, going 0-3 in pool play. The Mustangs were seeded 7th in the state tournament and played in Pool B alongside Valley Heights, Ellinwood, and Sedgwick.
The Mustangs played back-to-back games at 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM. Unfortunately, the Mustangs would take back-to-back losses as well. The Mustangs first were swept 2-0 by #2 Ellinwood: 25-9 and 25-15. Then the Mustangs were swept by Sedgwick: 25-20, 26-24.
The final game Doniphan West played was a well-fought battle against the #6 Valley Heights Mustangs at around 12:30 PM. Unfortunately, despite the efforts from Doniphan West, they fell at the hand of another sweep from Valley Heights: 25-17, 25-15.
The Mustangs still accomplished going to state for the second time in program history, however, more impressively going to state for the first time in the classification of 2A.
Katie Johnson had an incredible morning to end her senior career with 23 kills and 28 total points (STATS NOT PRECISE). Belle Smith also finished the night with 11 total points contributed to the offense, as well as Kya Keller had four kills and a block.
Sadly, the season does end here with a 0-3 finish in pool play for the Mustangs, but they will have a lot of upcoming talent amongst the already great leadership from first-year head coach Carla Johnson.
