Sabetha Girls Win Burlington Invitational, Boys Take Fourth

The third and final day of the Burlington Invitational basketball tournament concluded on Friday with the Sabetha girls claiming the tournament championship while the boys took fourth.

The Sabetha Boys went into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and won their first matchup with Labette County, 50-40. Gabe Garber had 17 points and Jesse Burger had 13 points as well. In the boys semifinal matchup they would face Caney Valley. The Bullpups would upset the Bluejays as Jesse Burger had 22 points and David Dyke chipped in 12 points and Braeden Cox netted 11 points in the 2nd round loss. The Sabetha Boys then faced the Burlington Wildcats for the Boys 3rd place game. Jesse Burger, Gabe Garber and Joe Gruber would all 3 have 18 points a piece and Braeden Cox netted 15 points, however the Burlington Wildcats would get the 82-79 win in double overtime. Jace Watkins had 30 points and Brannon Nordstedt netted 26 points for the Wildcats in the win.

The Sabetha Girls went into the tournament as the number 4 seed. In the girls 1st game the Lady Jays faced Caney Valley picking up a 57-24 win, as Maggi Hughes, Trista Argabright and Jessica Payne all had 8 points a piece. The girls’ semifinal matchup was a rematch from last season against Labette County and the Lady Jays upset the number 1 seed Grizzlies by a score of 48-31. Melinna Schumann had 14 points, Hillary Krebs chipped in 10 points and Maggi Hughes netted 7 points in the win. The Lady Jays then faced off against Burlington in the championship and came away with a 42-29 win behind Melinna Schumann’s 14 points. Leah Renyer had 7 points, Hillary Krebs also netted 9 points as well.

The Sabetha Boys place placed fourth in the Burlington Invite and were led in scoring by Jesse Burger who finished with 63 points, Gabe Garber 41 points and Braeden Cox 29 points. The Sabetha Girls however won the tournament, led by tournament MVP Melinna Schumann’s 35 points, while Hillary Krebs added 25 points in the tournament and Maggi Hughes 21 points. Both Sabetha Boys and Girls will be back in action next Friday, as they play host to Silver Lake, in Sabetha.
