Twin Valley League Tournament Day One Recap

After Mother Nature postponed the opening round of the Twin Valley League tournament on Saturday the opening round got underway Monday and as always it was an exciting day of action.

With expected weather again Friday and Saturday the tournament will wrap up Thursday night and an updated version of the bracket can be found here.

Girls Axtell 54, Washington County 51 – Overtime

Washington County used a 15-12 fourth quarter to force overtime, but Axtell outscored the Tigers 7-3 in the extra period to come out on top. Hana Schmitz led the Eagles with 19 points, while Kinsey Feldkamp added 14 points including five points in overtime. Camryn Boykin led Washington County with 18 points on five 3-pointers.

Girls Clifton-Clyde 56, Onaga 12

The Eagles jumped out to a 36-7 lead at the half and never looked back. Mallory Callahan led Clifton-Clyde with 15 points while Jaysie Bowser added 14 points. Kady Figge led Onaga with five points.

Boys Valley Heights 60, Wetmore 28

Valley Heights jumped out to a 34-12 lead at halftime behind 11 first half points from Trey Martin. Martin led the Mustangs and all scorers with 16 points, while Cameron Beardsley added 11 points. Joel Hutfles led the Cardinals scoring 23 of Wetmore’s 28 points in the game.

Boys Washington County 68, Doniphan West 30

Washington County posted 21-point first and second quarters to jump on Doniphan West 42-17 at the half before putting the game away with a 20-5 fourth quarter. Drew Buhrman led the Tigers with 21 points on five 3-pointers, while Tyler Nelson chipped in 16 points. Doniphan West was led in scoring by Trent Spiker who finished with 11 points.

Girls Blue Valley 59, Linn 31

Blue Valley held Linn to just two points in the first quarter to jump out to a 15-2 lead and pushed their advantage to 32-16 at the break. Brookyn Zoeller led the Rams with 21 points, while Allie Cassel added 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line.

Girls Valley Heights 56, Troy 26

Valley Heights doubled up Troy 16-8 in the first quarter and led 30-14 at the half in a dominating win. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Emma Toerber who finished with a game-high 16 points, while Sam Vermetten added 13 and Maddy Vermetten 11. Avery Euler led the Trojans with 9 points on the night.

Boys Centralia 57, Onaga 34

Centralia jumped out to a 19-11 lead over Onaga after the first quarter behind six points from Kamble Haverkamp and never looked back. Daegan Steinlage added 11 first half points as the Panthers pushed their lead to 18 points at the half before getting up by 24 points going into the fourth quarter. Steinlage led Centralia with 15 points, while Nathan Hauffler added 11 points and Haverkamp added 10. Onaga was led by Quinton Norris’ 14 points while Aaron Schwartz added 12.

Boys Clifton-Clyde 61, Linn 26

The Eagles jumped out to an 18-1 lead after the first quarter and held Linn to just five total points in the first half. Gunner Coffman led the Eagles with 14 points while Wyatt Lange added 13. Trent Beier led Linn with 7 points while Daniel York added 6 points.

Girls Doniphan West 51, Wetmore 45

Doniphan West forced 25 Wetmore turnovers to pick up an opening round win. The two teams combined to shoot 68 free throws as Wetmore finished 22-of-36 from the line while the Mustangs finished 19-of-32. Makinley Smith and Heidi Leach each led Doniphan West with 14 points as Smith shot 8-of-10 from the charity stripe while Myah Olson added 13 points. Alyssa Bloom led Wetmore and all scorers with 17 points in the game, shooting 12-of-14 from the line.

Boys Axtell 61, Troy 51

Axtell outscored Troy 34-13 between the second and fourth quarters to come away with the opening round win. Quinn Buessing led the Eagles with 22 points on the night while Hunter Koch added 14. Reid Jasper led Troy with 16 points while Tate Smith added 13 and Kipp Jasper finished with 11.
