Sabetha Bluejays Take Pair of Wins In Regular Season Finale Versus Royal Valley

Looking to head into the postseason with on a high note Sabetha hosted Royal Valley in Big Seven League play on Thursday night and both teams were in search of a win in their regular season finales. The Bluejays on senior night were led by seniors in the swept of the Panthers as the Sabetha girls won a tight 40-34 contest and the boys used strong second and third quarters to top a depleted Royal Valley team 48-31. 

Tied 6-6 early on in the first quarter Royal Valley went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-6 lead with 2:45 left in the first quarter but Sabetha closed the gap to three at 14-11 by the end of the first with Lauren Huber keeping the Bluejays in the game early with eight first quarter points. Bluejays them stymied Royal Valley quite a bit in the second and outscored them 9-2 to go into intermission up 20-16 their largest lead of the game at the time. Royal Valley responded with a solid start to the second half flipping the story of the second quarter in their favor with a 9-3 third quarter to lead 25-23 entering the fourth; Taylor Russell speared the Panthers third with six of the teams nine points in the quarter. The fourth quarter however belonged to the Bluejays as they outscored Royal Valley 17-9 and avenged an earlier season loss to the Panthers claiming the 40-34 win. 

Sabetha was led on the night by Huber who scored 11 points and earned Citizens State Bank & Trust Company "Player to Bank On" honors on KNZA, while Grace Kuenzi scored nine points. The win pushes the Bluejays to 10-10 on the season and they finish 8-8 in Big Seven League play, while also snapping a four-game losing streak. 

Royal Valley with the loss falls to 7-13 on the year and finishes 6-10 in the Big Seven League as Russell led them in the loss with 10 points. 

The Panther boys entered the contest with Sabetha with a depleted roster due to sickness that even had Coach Pelton sidelined but the Panthers pounced on a quick start going up 10-1 in the first 3:18 of the contest and led by nine points at multiple spots in the first quarter. The Bluejays settled in after the first four minutes of the game and drew within one-point by the end of the first as Royal Valley led only 14-13. The lead changed hands 2:13 into the second quarter as Sabetha took their first lead at 16-14 at the 5:47 mark in the second and went on to outscored Royal Valley 12-3 in the second to lead 25-17 at the half. Sabetha continued to take advantage of Royal Valley's struggles in the third quarter giving up only one-point in the third and scoring 12 themselves to lead 37-18 entering the fourth and ultimately grabbing the 48-31 win. 

Keegan Cox paced the Bluejays scoring a season high 18 points with 10 coming in the first half and his performance earned him Citizen's State Bank & Trust Company "Player to Bank On" honors on KNZA. Eric Renyer added 14 points in the win and the Bluejays improved to 11-9 on the year and finish 10-6 in the Big Seven League, while heading into the postseason on a third-game winning streak. 

The loss sends Royal Valley to 7-13 on the year and they finish 7-9 in the Big Seven League. Leondre Hale paced the Panthers with 11 points, hitting three three-pointers in the loss. 

Both teams now turn their attention to the postseason and their first round Sub-State matchup in Class 3A. For Royal Valley they will be competing in the St. Mary's Sub-State but for the first round the girls will play at Riley County on Monday, February 27th, while the boys will play Tuesday 28th at Rossville both games at 7:00pm. For Sabetha they are hosting a 3A Sub-State but first both the girls and boys will have to play on the road for their first round games. Lady Bluejays will play at Maur Hill-Mount Academy Monday at 7:00pm and the boys will play at Horton on Tuesday at 7:00pm (the girls Sabetha game will be broadcasted on KAIR 93.7 FM, while the boys Sabetha game will be on 103.9 KNZA)
