Elle Williams
|
With the high school sports season cut short due to the coronavirus outbreak and spring sports athletes not getting a chance to partake in their seasons we have decided to pick athletes of the week to highlight standout athletes returning from a year ago.
Our first girl’s athlete is Doniphan West’s Elle Williams who was expected to be one of the top returning long distance runners in the state after helping lead the Mustang girls to a 1A State Championship last season in cross country and an 8th place finish individually at state track and field.
Williams was just named one of the Topeka Capitol Journal’s top cross-country athletes after taking fourth at state a year ago with a time of 20:32.79.
That time was 20 seconds better than her time at regionals in which she earned a third-place finish after taking second at the Twin Valley League meet the week before.
She reached the state meet for the second straight year last year after taking 15th place in 2018 showing a huge improvement to her fourth place finish a year ago.
Williams was expecting big things heading into what would have been her junior season but will unfortunately have to wait until next year to find out if she can lead the Mustangs to yet another state title cross country and possbily a higher finish at state track and field.
