The 2019 legion baseball season rolled along last week with a couple days off due to the fourth of July and complete recaps of each game from last week can be found below.

Wednesday, July 3

Corning dominates Marysville Jr’s in sweep

By scoring a run in every inning Corning was able to build a lead early before going on to win in run-rule fashion over the Marysville junior team 12-2 in five innings. Kamble Haverkamp led the offensive charge with three hit and four RBI’s, while Cooper Deters added two hits and an RBI as well. On the mound Ian Haverkamp did enough for the win, as he went all five innings giving up just five hits and two runs while striking out five.

In game two Corning jumped on top from the start and never looked back scoring nine runs in the second inning before going on to win by a 12-1 final in four innings. Kamble Haverkamp and Austin Holthaus each blasted solo home runs in the win, while Ethan Becker collected two RBI’s. Becker also got the win on the mound for Corning, going all four innings allowing just two hits and one run while striking out seven.

Oskaloosa drops non-league doubleheader to Ottawa

Game one was a struggle all the way around for Oskaloosa as Ottawa received a no-hitter while the River Bandits committed four errors in a 12-0 loss. Oskaloosa was only able to get two baserunners on walks by Gage Burdiek and Justin Miller, but failed to record a hit in the contest. Avery Gatzemeyer ultimately pitched well allowing just two earned runs, but his defense let him down giving up seven runs total accredited to Gatzemeyer.

Just like game one the defense struggled in the game two 14-3 loss committing six errors. Ottawa scored five runs in the first, three in the second and three in the third before putting the game away with three more runs in the fifth. Despite the loss Gage Burdiek and Avery Gatzemeyer each collected two hits while Cooper Jepson added the only other hit.

Sunday, July 7

Sabetha earns two NEKL run-rule wins over Doniphan County

In Sabetha’s 11-3 game one win, Brayden Becker fanned 14 hitters in five innings allowing three runs of which two were earned.  Becker also went 3-for-3 with five RBI's in the game. The Raptors jumped to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning, but DC answered by scoring three runs in the second with the big hit coming on a triple by Kobe Davis.  Becker settled down after the second by fanning eight of the next 10 batters.  Riley Herrmann, Braden Argabright and Jalen Worthley added two hits apiece as Sabetha collected 13 hits in the contest.

Game two saw Jalen Worthley pitch all four innings allowing only one hit and striking out four in the game.  Worthley was on base all three at bats as well and helped himself with a first inning 2-run single.  Jake Longabaugh collected three hits and joined Worthley with two RBI's.  Seth Burdick also had two RBI's in Sabetha’s win.

Marysville continues to hold top spot in NEKL standings with sweep of Silver Lake

In game one of Marysville’s sweep of Silver Lake it was Derek Roever who was the star as he delivered a walk-off double, while Storm Slupianek tossed all nine innings allowing just six hits in the 4-3 win. Game two was all Marysville from the start, as Jonny Crome, Owen Nietfeld, Derek Roever and Storm Slupianek each collected three RBI’s in a 20-0 win.
