In a Big 7 game that featured three ties and lead changes, it was only fitting that a special teams play decided the final outcome. The week two battle featured eight special teams plays including five in the fourth quarter and a blocked PAT with :55 remaining gave Hiawatha a 24-23 win against Jeff West.

The Redhawks also scored their final touchdown on the second blocked punt of the contest, which was recovered by Peyton Newell to give the home team a 24-17 lead with 7:49 left in the game. Yet, Hiawatha had a missed field goal on their next drive and converted a fake punt on their own side of the field with 3:42 left before having their next punt attempt blocked later on the same drive with just over two minutes remaining. Jeff West went 52 yards and scored with :54 left as Ian Mullins connected on fourth and ten and found Drew Slimmer on a 17 yard touchdown, just before Hiawatha blocked the deciding PAT.

Mullins was 10 of 27 threw the air for 252 yards and a trio of touchdowns. Slimmer caught a pair, including an 88 yard bomb that gave the Tigers a 17-10 lead in the third stanza, and finished with 6 catches for 186 yards earning Citizens State Bank and Trust Company Player of the Game honors. Jeff West finished with negative yards rushing and fell to 1-1, losing to Hiawatha for the first time in 7 years and first defeat under Coach Steve Johnson.

Brad Chilcoat tossed a 28 yard TD to Conner Bigham to open the scoring and also connected on a 33 yard score to Denzel Chilcoat late in the third quarter. Brad finished the game 17 of 24 for 216 yards while Parker Hasenkamp added 68 yards rushing on 23 carries.

Grady Middendorf hit a 25 yard field goal for Jeff West in the second quarter while Bigham answered with a 30 yard kick to tie the game 10-10 at the half. Both teams committed a pair of turnovers in the third frame. The Tigers played without a pair of two-way starters as Cylus Tichenor and Bret Ricklefs were serving one-game suspensions.

Hiawatha is now 2-0 for the first time since 2005 and plays at Royal Valley in week three while Jeff West travels to Seneca to play 1-1 Nemaha Valley this Friday, September 14th.
