Highland Lady Scotties Take 5th Place in NJCCA DII National Tournament
By Mike Smith

Highland Community College lady Scotties capped off a stellar season on Saturday taking home a fifth place finish in this year's NJCAA Division II National tournament, finishing the year 30-6 after topping Monroe 72-57.

Scotties started off the game great working out to a 10-3 lead early behind early Monroe Mustang turnovers. Highland continued to push out to a 35-21 lead at the half, after scoring 20 points of 16 first half turnovers by the Mustangs last season's National Champions. The turnover trend continued in the second half for Monroe as they complied 10 more in the game for total of 26, which lead to 26 Highland points in the ballgame. Along with the pesky defense the Scotties used balanced offense yet again, like all season to grab the win over Monroe.

Five players finished the game with double figures for Highland lead by freshman guard, Ashley Torres who paced the way for the Scotties on the day with 16 points and dishing five assists. The Bowser sister's, Ryann and Rylie each added 12 points on the night, while each grabbing four rebounds, also. Sophomore, TaMiya Green posted another double-double like she has done all season, finishing the game with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore, Royce Shields rounded out the double figure scoring for Highland as she tallied 10 points in the game.

Highland finishes the tournament going 3-1 in tournament action as the #6 seed. Scotties opened the tournament with a 69-56 win over Chesapeake College, following that up with a loss in the quarterfinals to Illinois Central College, 59-55. Scotties then responded to win their next two games to capture that fifth place finish downing the CC of Rhode Island 71-47 to stay alive and then dispatching Monroe 72-57 in the fifth place game. Sophomore, TaMiya Green the Lawrence native earned All-Tournament team honors for her stellar play in the National Tournament.

Scotties season was highlighted by many different instances as they were ranked in the top 10 all season and ranked #1 for a brief time, after beating the #1 team in the country Johnson County CC. Highland then got revenage on JCCC for last year's loss in the Regional Championship as the Scotties topped JCCC this year for the Region VI Championship this season, earning the right to play in the NJCAA Division II National tournament.

Highland goes out winning this season finishing 30-6 on the year with a fifth place finish in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
