Highland Lady Scotties Dominate to Stay Alive in NJCAA DII Tournament

Highland lady Scotties continued their season with another postseason win this won ultimately in dominating fashion behind a stellar second half defensive performance and great individual performances to go with their team defense, to top Rhode Island 71-47.

The #6 seed Scotties took on the #10 seed Rhode Island squad for the right to earn a spot in the fifth place game on Saturday as part of the NJCAA Division II national tournament. Game started off in the worse way for Highland with six early turnovers which led to seven early points for Rhode Island and quickly ballooned them out to a double figure lead against the Scotties. Highland then responed with a pair of runs, including a 10-0 run late in the first half to push ahead, as sophomore, Janelle Sailing poured in five three-pointers in the first half, scoring 17 of her 20 points in the first half.

Scotties lead it only by four at the half 36-32, but the second half Highland shutdown Rhode Island holding them scoreless for a period of time and holding them to only 15 second half points. Highland used nine three-poiners, a +23 rebound margin (53-30) and three players in double figures to keep their season going.

Sailing lead the Scotties on the day with her game-high 20 points, while sophomore's, Royce Shields and TaMiya Green each chipped in double digits, also finishing with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Green also was a monster on the boards grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds, for another double-double on the season.

With the win Highland improved to 29-6 and on the season and earned the right to play for fifth place in this years NJCAA Division II national tournament. The Scotties will play their final game of the season on Saturday (March 23rd) at 2:00pm as they will take on Monroe College.
