The 2026 State Wrestling Tournaments concluded on Saturday with plenty of headlines around our area across multiple classifications.
4A Girls
Atchison junior Oktavija Burnett was crowned the 145-pound state champion. She went a perfect 4-0 in the tournament and won all of her matches by fall. Burnett defeated Paola's Shaelynn Smail in the title match by fall late in the second period. Burnett was #1 ranked and the #1-seed in the tournament and finishes her junior season with a record of 23-2.
Nemaha Central had two runner-up finishers with Renae Keim at 105 and Autumn Feldkamp at 135. Both won regional championships and were one match away from claiming state titles. Keim lost by fall to Jade Wilson of Abilene in the title match while Feldkamp lost by fall in the first round to Morgan Hills of Colby in the title match.
Holton junior Marley Gilliland finished third place at 190 and closed her season with an overall record of 35-3. Gilliland lost her match in the semifinals on Friday but bounced back with back-to-back wins on Saturday for the top three finish in the class. Jefferson West senior Sophie Waters also got a medal with a sixth place finish. Waters lost her first match of the tournament and would rattle off three straight wins on the backside of the bracket to earn a top six finish.
4A Boys
Jefferson West senior Osiris Unruh, #1 ranked and the #1 seed in the 285 bracket, cruised into the finals with three straight pinfall wins on Friday afternoon. Unruh was matched up with Remington Merlau of Rose Hill in the title match, and it would go to the ultimate tiebreaker with Unruh getting the win via a 3-2 final. Unruh finishes his senior year at 32-1 with the state title in hand. He's signed to play football at Pitt State in the fall.
Nemaha Central junior Harry Langill and Hiawatha senior Gabe Johnson each finished in sixth place. Langill at 126 and Johnson at 215. Both would lose their first matches of the tournament and then rattle off three straight on the back half of the bracket to earn their way onto the medal stand.
3-2-1A Girls
We had quite a few girls who made their way into semifinal contests, but Rossville sophomore Nora Mitchell was the lone to advance to a state championship match at 105 pounds. Mitchell would fall to via an 8-3 decision against Jentri Porter of Wichita County in the title match as her record concluded at 37-12 on the season.
Third place finishes at the tournament came from McLouth's Makinley Daniels at 130, Maur Hill-Mount Academy's Hollie Finneran at 140, Silver Lake's Madelyn Wonnell at 145, and Onaga senior Emmarsyn Fordham at 235.
Fourth place finishes by Silver Lake junior Kamiryn Clark at 100 and Maur Hill-Mount Academy sophomore Emma Vice at 125.
Fifth place finishes by Annabele Burton of Riley County at 130, Silver Lake freshman Ally Burgos at 140, Silver Lake senior Makayla Connor at 155, Doniphan West junior Layla Kunhert at 190, and Royal Valley sophomore Hanna Myers at 235.
Rounding out the medals in sixth place were Silver Lake's Riley Mohler at 125, Atchison County senior Tessa McAlexander at 130, and St. Marys freshman Taylor Runich at 140.
Russell won the team title with Silver Lake finishing in fifth place with 67 points. Rossville finished in 10th place with Maur Hill-Mount Academy finishing in a tie for 15th place.
3-2-1A Boys
Atchison County led the way here finishing in a tie for second place in the team standings with Caney Valley with 99 points. Hoxie dominated the tournament winning the team title with 196.5 points.
The Tigers had two state champions with Max Bottorff at 175 and Elijah Webb at 190. Bottorff won his first three matches of the tournament by fall and then defeated Bo Kyler of Ellsworth by a 15-0 tech fall in the title match to conclude his senior season with a record of 42-1. Webb won his first three matches of the tournament by fall, majority decision, and decision to get to the title match. He would defeat Silver Lake senior Paxton Willett by a 9-8 decision to claim the title. Webb finishes his junior season on top with a record of 40-8.
Multiple third place finishes which were from Riley County junior Tanner Rhoton at 113 and Silver Lake senior Bryce Cormier at 120.
Fourth place finishes came from Pleasant Ridge sophomore Marshall Waters at 126, Royal Valley senior Cyrus Harding at 190, and Atchison County sophomore Houston Schletzbaum at 215.
Silver Lake had two fifth place finishes from junior Kayden Clelland at 175 and sophomore Carter Spreer at 285 while Sabetha junior Lincoln Menold finished in fifth place at 138.
Rounding out the medals in sixth place were Oskaloosa's Charles Thacher at 113, Sabethe senior Andre Dalinghaus at 157, and Sabetha junior Curtis Fitzgerald at 165.
