The Axtell Eagles girls team (6-Seed) came up victorious against the Valley Heights Mustangs (3-Seed) in an upset TVL victory, put together by an incredible third quarter. The win broke a 11-streak losing streak to Valley Heights, with the last time Axtell having won dating back to 2016.

Valley Heights opened up the first quarter out scoring the Eagles 16-10 with all five starters getting on the board to score, including a three-pointer by Lindsay Gray and four points from Mia Vermetten. Katelyn Detweiler, who’d go on to being the player of the game, would finish with five points in the first quarter. The half would end 31-20, with Valley Heights having five players with 6+ points by the half. Maggie Strathman had a solid second quarter to keep Axtell in the game with six points and a rebound, while Detweiler added another four.

The third quarter is where Axtell flourished and exploded with an impressive outscore in the third quarter against Valley Heights 25-6, leading 45-37 going into the fourth quarter. The sophomore guard Detweiler had nine points in the third quarter to lead the Eagles. Ava Smith tried to keep Valley Heights a float with four points in the quarter to lead the Mustangs.

The game would conclude 59-54 as Valley Heights would climb their way back into the game, despite Ava Smith fouling out early in the fourth quarter. Valley Heights won every single quarter outscoring Axtell, except for the third, which inevitably was the deciding quarter to the score.

Katelyn Detweiler continued her strong TVL tournament performance, after her 16 points on Saturday vs Onaga she put 21 points on the #10 ranked team in 2A, Valley Heights. She went an impressive 11/11 from the free throw line and finished with seven boards. Ava Broxterman finished with 10 points for Axtell, while Maggie Strathman concluded with 12.

Axtell moves on and will play Linn on Friday at 7:30PM, with coverage continuing on 92.1 KMZA.
