The Doniphan West girls basketball team survived a furious second half rally from Troy on Friday night to win their sixth straight game before the break 47-46.
Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter as the game was tied 5-5 after the first eight minutes.
Both teams would pick it up on the offensive end in the second quarter as the Mustangs (6-1) would outscore the Trojans (3-3) 19-13 to take a 24-18 halftime lead.
D-West would open the third quarter with a big run to build a 17 point lead, but the Trojans would follow that with an 18-0 run going into the early portions of the fourth quarter.
The game was back and forth for the remainder of the game. Down one in the final minute, the Mustangs would get a go-ahead three pointer from Emmy Jo Whetstine.
Troy would get one free throw from Kyler Luedke with under 20 seconds left to get the Trojans within one.
With four seconds left, Doniphan West had two free throws from Whetstine, but she missed them both which allowed Troy to have a chance.
The Trojans got the ball into the hands of Harper Whetstine but was hounded by multiple defenders near mid court and she was unable to get a good look at the buzzer.
Courtney Johnson led Doniphan West with 22 points despite not scoring in either the first or fourth quarters. Andi Foster added eight points and nine rebounds.
Whetstine led Troy with 23 points, and she surpassed 1,500 career points in the process. Hailey Groff added 10 points and Alyson Grable chipped in with seven points for the Trojans.
