Highland Lady Scotties Basketball Earn Spot in National Tourney
By Mike Smith

There had been only one team to beat the #1 team in the nation this season in NJCAA Division II women's basketball and that was the Highland lady Scotties, as they topped Johnson County CC earlier this season in Highland, 59-56. Johnson County got revenge on their home floor later in the season behind a 77-62 win over the Scotties.

Saturday was the rubber match this time with a lot more on the line than the two regular season games as this time the Region VI championship was on the line with a spot in the national tournament to go with it. The #10 Scotties faced off with the #1 Cavaliers for the second straight year in the regional championship, looking to win the rubber match this season and avenge last year's regional championship loss to JCCC and that the Scotties did taking down Johnson County, 76-75 in a thriller behind a buzzer-beater by freshman, Ashley Torres advancing Highland to the national tournament.

Head Coach, BJ Smith for Highland had his girls ready to play in the biggest game of the year as the lady Scotties pushed out to a 40-34 lead at the half over JCCC, but the Cavaliers wouldn't go away quietly. Johnson County muscled back into the game and held a one-point lead late in a game that featured nine lead changes and nine ties. With three seconds remaining in the game JCCC held the 75-74 lead and then Highland's, Torres struck with a shot off the glass to propel the Scotties to the win.

Four players finished the matchup in double figures with Royce Shields leading the way with 17 points on the day. Ryann Bowser and Tamiya Green both added 15 points each, with Ashley Torres chipping in 13 points including the game winner.

With the win the Scotties knock off Johnson County for the second time this season, both times while they were ranked number one (JCCC only two losses of the year are to Highland) and improves their record to 27-5 on the year as they gear up for the national tournament.

The 2013 NJCAA Division II national tournament will be held in East Peoria, Illinois at Illinois Central College in Lorene Ramsey Gymnasium starting on March 19th and running through the 23rd. The bracket and matchup information will be announced in the coming days.
