The Kansas City Royals finished their opening weekend series against the Minnesota Twins going 1-2 with a 5-1 loss on Saturday, followed by an 11-0 win on Sunday.

In Saturday's contest, there was very little offense in the first half of the game. The Twins had the first opportunity to score in the top of the fourth inning with runners on first and second with one out, but they weren’t able to get any of the runners across home plate.

The Royals also had two baserunners in the bottom of the fourth inning, but like the Twins, they weren’t able to get any runs.

The first run of the game was scored by Kansas City when MJ Melendez got an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, which brought Bobby Witt Jr. home.

The Twins tried to respond in the next half-inning, loading the bases with one out. However, Christian Vazquez grounded into a double play ending in the threat.

In the eighth inning, Minnesota was able to successfully bring home their first run of the day and tie the game with a bouncing chopper by Byron Buxton over the head of Maikel Garcia.

The go-ahead run for the Twins came from an RBI single by Vazquez off Will Smith. They didn’t stop there as Alex Kirilloff got a sac fly to go up 3-1, and Buxton delivered a two-RBI double to add insult to injury and put the game out of reach.

After just two runs in their first two games, it was an offensive explosion for Kansas City on Sunday.

It started early with Salvador Perez hitting a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning with Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino aboard. It wasn’t the most explosive home run of his career with an exit velocity of just 98.7 mph, according to MLB Statcast, but he was able to take the 83-mph changeup that was low in the zone and pull it 390 feet over the wall in left field.

Kyle Isbel and Garcia continued the party in the second inning with back-to-back home runs. Isbel’s was a 403-foot solo home run to right field, and Garcia smoked his 422 feet to give the Royals a 5-0 lead. This was part of a six-run second inning to get them up 9-0.

The fourth home run came the following inning by Witt Jr. for his first of the season and was the longest of the day, going 434 feet to straightaway center field with the bases empty.

The fifth and final dinger was in the sixth inning with Nelson Velazquez getting in on the fun. He pulled a 95-mph sinker to dead left to give them their final run of the day.

After getting just 10 hits in the first two games, Kansas City got 14 in their Sunday victory. Salvy had the best stat line of anyone going 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored, including the homer to get the scoring started.

Witt Jr. also had another multi-hit effort going 3-for-5. He’s been white-hot to start the season batting .545 in the first series, despite the team’s shortcomings in the first two games.

Brady Singer looked mighty impressive in his season debut with seven full innings pitched and surrendering just three hits, no runs, one walk and striking out ten batters.

Up next is their first out-of-division series where they will be at Baltimore from Monday through Wednesday. The Orioles looked darn good in their opening series as they took two of three games in Los Angeles against the Angels. The O’s are hoping to break out this season after winning their first division championship since 2014 but falling to the Texas Rangers in the ALDS.

Then, they have their first series against the Chicago White Sox, which will be a four-game series starting on Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. CWS is coming off an underwhelming season in which their playoff window was firmly slammed shut with a record of 61-101. They parted ways with their general manager Rick Hahn in late August. Last year was their first season under manager Pedro Grifol, who was on the Royals coaching staff for a number of seasons.
