In a game that feature runs by each team and both teams taking leads it was the Wetmore Cardinals throwing the final blow in the game for the TVL road win over the Axtell Eagles. Cardinals used a 22-9 fourth quarter to capture the win after being down 36-30 going into the fourth and final period. Wetmore managed this big fourth quarter while losing seniors, Dana Kramer and Jordan Evans who both fouled of the ball game in the final frame.

The game was tied at 22-22 at the half after a pair of 14-8 quarters in the first half with Axtell leading 14-8 after the first quarter and then Wetmore responded with a 14-8 second period to tie the game.

While the Cardinals tied the game in the second quarter senior, Alayna Noe appeared to tweak her ankle but it didn't stifle her as she came back in the second half. Noe tallied 13 points on the night with six the second quarter on the Cardinals run to tie the game. Kramer lead Wetmore on the night with 14 points with the second quarter being her big quarter also with six points in that frame. Junior, Brianna Boden provided that final push that the Cardinals needed to get the win as she tallied 12 points on the night behind a pair of fourth quarter three-pointers.

In the loss Axtell was lead by a season-high and game-high from freshman, Kiersten Talbot who tallied 16 points, while sophomore, Ashley Buessing chipped in nine points.

Wetmore improved to 11-8 on the season and cemented themselves to play Frankfort in sub-state, but have two more regular season games before that starting with Tuesday's game at Burlingame and then at home versus Horton on Thursday (game on 103.9 KNZA & 92.1 KMZA). Axtell fell to 8-11 on the season with the loss and now know they will have to play B&B in sub-state action, but have their sights set on Blue Valley Randolph to close out the regular season on Tuesday.

Boys

Both the Axtell Eagles and Wetmore Cardinals started the contest off cold but the Eagles found a groove throughout the game, while Wetmore seemingly was unable to fully get into a rhythm.

The Eagles pushed themselves out to a 21-15 lead at the half with an 8-2 first quarter being the difference in the first half. Coming out of the half the Eagles continued to pick up the offense, while the Cardinals struggled as Axtell used a 17-3 third period to push their lead to 20 points and win it by that margin, 53-33.

Junior big man, Payton Heinen lead the way for Axtell with 18 points on the night doing damage in every quarter throughout the game. Senior, Aaron Schmelzle joined Heinen in double figures with 11 points on the night, while seven other Eagles tallied at least a point in the game.

Axtell with the win improves to 12-8 on the season and look to a road game against Blue Valley Randolph on Tuesday to end the regular season, before gearing up for Frankfort in sub-state action. For the Cardinals of Wetmore they fell to 1-17 on the season and have two more regular season games left; first up on Tuesday road game against Burlingame then they host Horton on Thursday (game on 103.9 KNZA & 92.1 KMZA).
