The Jackson Heights Vs St Mary’s playoff game did not disappoint, especially with JH wanting revenge after St Marys won last years matchup in week nine 46-14. The game was a tug of war battle but finally pulling away at the very end was St Marys with the final score of 14-6. However it wasn’t all the Bears, the Cobras held a lead for first two quarters and lost it in the third.

Beginning the game, St Marys Bears won the coin toss and elected to differ letting the Cobras start off with the ball, which is only the second time this year the Cobras have started off with the ball. The Cobras began with a fumble on a third and six letting the Bears start in preferable field position on the Cobras twenty-three yard line. However, on a third and long Micheal Cornielson for the snakes was able to record an interception across the middle of the field; Which set the Cobras up for their one and only touchdown scored on the night with a seventy-six yard drive, capped off with a Josh Smith three-yard touchdown run. This score of 6-0 led into halftime with both teams being apart of “Punt City”.

Going into the second half, the Bears started the opener of the third-quarter with a fifty-four yard touchdown pass from Brady Hurla to Korleone Holz for a touchdown, which was a similar play that the Bears had ran earlier but Holz dropped the easy TD-Pass. The first two-point conversion for the Bears was no good leaving the game tied 6-6 with eleven minutes and eight seconds left of the third quarter. The Cobras were forced a TOD in the third along with multiple more punts. The end of the third ended 14-6 with a third-and-fourteen converted by a back of the endzone dime from Hurla to Howard Rezac.

In the fourth quarter it was a shut out for both teams with them going scoreless. Jackson Heights we’re able to get the ball back three times in the fourth but did not produce points with the possessions, in the end the Cobras had nine possessions but only had six points to show for it. St Marys was able to run victory formation on the Cobras twelve yard line as the Cobras had no more timeouts remaining and nothing left to do.

Some positive things to say is how well the Greg Nilges coached defense played, forcing two intercepts and a well drawn up blitz that lead to huge sacks for the snakes. With that the Cobras will also look forward to next season with QB Drake Mellies entering his Junior year and RB Josh Smith entering his Senior year.
