The Jackson Heights Cobras came out on their second away game of the season victorious 46-14 over the Pleasant Ridge Rams, who hosted their first game of the year. Despite a very large crowd coming out and multiple momentum shifts in favor of the Rams with one being a 75-yard touchdown return off of a kickoff from Lucas Beying, the Cobras still came out with the win.
The Cobras had in total eleven possessions and Pleasant Ridge had just ten; in the first half alone both teams combined for thirteen possessions. Jackson Heights won the opening coin toss and selected to differ to start the game; however, the snakes were able to start both the first and second half with the ball due to an opening fumble by the Rams. This resulted in the first of many touchdown drives capped off by Drake Mellies.
Switching things over by talking about this young star for the Cobras, Mellies, who was last week’s athlete of the week kept the numbers coming. This week with almost two-hundred total scrimmage yards between passing and rushing Drake also added on five touchdowns (one a punt return touchdown). Drake was able to put up another incredible defensive, special teams, and offensive performance despite his two offensive interceptions.
The Cobras played a solid first half with it ending 22-0, despite the lack of scoring for how many times they had the ball in the Ram’s Redzone. Jackson Heights also went 0-4 on fourth down conversions and 5-8 on third down conversions. The Rams were forced to punt three straight possessions at one point in the game from the stout Cobra defense.
Cooper Beying played pretty solid despite not having the numbers he may have liked for the game; however, Cooper did have one fifty-yard touchdown pass to Camdem Thompson late into the fourth. Cooper had many passes to open receivers that were perfectly placed, but the receivers really just didn’t complete their role in today’s blowout from Jackson Heights.
In conclusion the Jackson Heights Cobras continue to look towards Drake Mellies to be the switch army knife of this team and will progress to 3-0 playing Riverside next week. The Rams will fall to 1-2 and will continue to rely on Cooper to lead the team to possible future wins.
