Royals Review: Eighth Consecutive Rebuilding Year Incoming

This past week is proof that 2023 will be the eighth consecutive rebuilding year for the Kansas City Royals (1-6) as they lost five of their six games this past week. At least for Royals fans, they know what they’re getting early in the season and aren’t being teased into thinking they could possibly be a contender all the way into August only to have their dreams crushed.

Offense was remarkably scarce this past week with Kansas City getting shut out twice in the last six games which makes it three shutouts on the season already.

Not only did the runs not come, but they were having struggles with just getting on base and getting hits. This past week, the Royals batted just .180 (34-189).

If there were to be a silver lining, Kansas City’s starting pitching has been adequate.

They combined for 31.2 innings pitched with an ERA of 3.41. Their overall ERA of 4.00 this season ranks 2nd in the AL Central, 7th in the American League and 11th among all MLB teams.

Even though the Kansas City Royals will not come close to making the playoffs this season, things will get better. I also think that some fans (albeit a small minority) can still get enjoyment out of this season.

KC has a young nucleus with some talent and promising prospects. They just need some better pieces in some areas and those areas are dragging down the rest of the team.

Manager Matt Quatraro should be given time as well to grow and develop in his managing abilities.

I think there was a level of optimism around the team with expectations that were unattainable. This team will be good, but it will be a while.

Their first two series were against teams (MIN, TOR) that will likely still be playing baseball in mid-October, too. Up next, they go on the road for the entirety of the upcoming week.

They travel to San Francisco to take on the Giants this weekend for a showdown between the two franchises that were in the World Series in 2014.

They then fly straight to Arlington for a three-game series with the Texas Rangers, who are a trendy team that made a lot of moves this past offseason.
