In a Delaware Valley League double-header in Effingham on Friday night, four teams met with a combined 44-10 record. Yet, like earlier this season in tournament play, the Atchison County Community High School Tigers prevailed. GIRLS = ACCHS 55, Valley Falls 43 BOYS = ACCHS 57, Valley Falls 42
GIRLS:
After six lead changes in the opening quarter, Valley Falls held a 14-13 lead. However, ACCHS started the second quarter on a 7-0 run and would never trail again. This game showcased 60 total fouls and 81 free throws. ACCHS converted 29 of 45 from the line to improve to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the DVL. Valley Falls was plagued by 21 turnovers and 22 of 36 at the stripe and fell to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in league play. Both teams had a pair of players foul out. Allison Wallisch, ACCHS senior, was named Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On" with a season high 20 points while adding 12 rebounds and 6 steals. Taylor Vandeloo added 11 points and was 7 of 7 from the foul-line. Valley Falls was led by Ashley Miller with 11 points and Ali Brown with 10.
BOYS:
In a similar pattern, minus a ton of fouls and free throws, the boys game was tied at 14 after one period. Then, the Tigers dominated the second quarter 22-10 and took a commanding 36-24 halftime advantage. Valley Falls started the third frame on a 9-2 run, but never got closer than 7 points before falling to 10-4 overall and 7-2 in the DVL. Luke Burns scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half for the Dragons and freshman, Marty Gatzemeyer added 9 in his first start of the year. ACCHS got 13 points off the bench from Ryan Olmstead, thanks to finishing a lot of great passes, while Ricky Kearney and Jacob Hansen each added 12. Hansen had 10 in the first half including a pair of treys and a steal and breakaway dunk that ignited the packed full gymnasium and he was the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On." Hansen added 6 assists, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, and in typical fashion, ACCHS had 15 total assists and hit 59 percent from the field. The Tigers remain undefeated at 15-0 on the season.
