Axtell gets fourth place at the Class 1A-D2 state tournament after losing the third place game 59-45 to the South Central Timberwolves.

The Eagles had a rough time getting the ball through the net as they collectively shot just 27.3% from the floor. They also only shot 6.3% from beyond the arc going 1-for-16.

For South Central, it was sophomore guard Jamie Sarmiento who led the team in scoring with 18 points. He led them in points in their semifinal loss to Greeley County yesterday with 14 points. He is your “Player to Bank On” brought to you by Farmers State Bank.

Axtell freshman guard Landon Schmitz was the only Eagle to shoot well Saturday afternoon as he went 5-for-7 with a team-high 11 points. Sophomore forward Brandon Schmelzle also scored nine points and had six rebounds.

The Eagles’ trip to Great Bend didn’t end the way they wanted it to, but they had a fantastic season with a Twin Valley League tournament championship and won their sub-state tournament with a thrilling 56-52 win over Hanover in the finals.

Their season concludes with an overall record of 21-6.
