Nemaha Central Sweeps Tuesday Night Doubleheader vs. Hiawatha

The Nemaha Central basketball teams picked up a Tuesday night doubleheader sweep at home over Hiawatha in Big 7 league play. 

Girls: Hiawatha 44, Nemaha Central 61

The Thunder opened up this game with a flurry on offense as they outscored the Redhawks 16-3 in the first quarter on their way to a big win to stay unbeaten in league play. 

Nemaha Central (13-1, 8-0) never gave up the double digit lead once they got it late in the first quarter. 

Hiawatha (7-7, 2-6) played a much better second half putting up 34 points after trailing 28-10 at halftime but was never able to threaten much the rest of the game. 

The Thunder were led by the KNZA player of the game which was Reagan Gerety with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Addy Holthaus was the leading scorer as she finished with 17 points. 

The Redhawks were led once again by Darcy Lierz as she finished with 20 points while making 12 of 16 free throws in the game. 

Boys: Hiawatha 30, Nemaha Central 49

The Thunder scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back on their way to the 19-point win at home. 

Nemaha Central (7-7, 5-3) led 18-9 at the end of the first quarter and 26-19 at halftime. The Redhawks (3-11, 1-7) battled back in the third quarter and got to within four but the Thunder followed with a 7-0 and that was the closest Hiawatha got the rest of the game. 

The Thunder were led by the KNZA player of the game which was Abe Hilbert with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Wade Leonard led the team with 12 points. 

Hiawatha was led by Ashton Rockey who finished with eight points. 

Up next for both on Friday, Nemaha Central hosts Holton while Hiawatha returns home to face Perry Lecompton.
