Tuesday night featured a pair of close games between Troy and Onaga. The Buffaloes girls’ team won by a final score of 50-45 and the Trojans boys’ team won in a thrilling double overtime finish with a final score of 67-61.

The girls’ game saw a quick start for Onaga with junior Maria Krohn scoring six first quarter points and sophomore forward Delaney Figge making a pair of field goals to go up 14-9. They would expand their lead going into halftime going up 26-14.

Onaga was able to keep up their intensity and maintain their 12-point lead going into the fourth quarter thanks to seven third quarter points from freshman forward Emmarsyn Fordham. However, Troy would rally with some big-time buckets from freshman phenom Harper Whetstine.

Troy senior guard Paityn Engemann and Krohn got into a bit of a scrum and picked up a double technical as the game got chippy at the end. Onaga made some free throws and played tough defense down the stretch to secure the victory.

Krohn finished with ten points for Onaga despite fouling out and Fordham finished with a team-high 11 points making them both the Players to Bank On brought to you by Farmers State Bank.

Whetstine finished with 11 points for Troy in the loss with Engemann also scoring ten.

The boys’ game would be just as chippy and competitive, if not more so. There were elbows swung, players throwing the ball at other players, more technical fouls, pushing and shoving, and, oh yeah, they played some good basketball too.

Onaga got out to a quick start just like the girls’ game, but Troy outscored Onaga 15-5 in the second quarter to go up 25-20 at the half.

In the third quarter, Troy operated their half-court offense well and made some shots, and Onaga was able to keep up thanks to their ability to make their free throws. In the quarter, Troy fouled Onaga ten times and Onaga did not foul Troy once.

Troy sophomore guard Logan Blevins took over in the fourth quarter for the Trojans as he scored seven points which helped them stay in the game. However, it was a last second layup by Onaga senior guard Tyree Figge that sent the game into overtime.

Figge would stay hot as he scored six points in the first overtime helping them rally to force a second overtime despite being down for pretty much the full four minutes and even down by two possessions at times.

Troy senior forward Reagan Hartman would make some clutch free throws for the Trojans in double overtime to lift themselves to a victory and after the game, they didn’t celebrate. I don’t think they had the mental or physical energy to do so after playing such a long and exhausting game.

Hartman finished with 17 points and scored ten points in the extra frames making him the Farmers State Bank “Player to Bank On”. Blevins finished with 15 points and junior guard Christian Etherton scored 12 points off the bench.

Figge and senior Zac Fisher led Onaga in scoring with 14 points apiece. Senior forward Jeremia Dorsey and senior guard Konnor Nider also scored 12 points each in the loss.
