The Wetmore football team had an incredible 2022 season in their first season at the 6-Man level.

The Cardinals won a Regional Title for the first time in school history as they dominated Burrton 63-7. The Cardinals would lose in the Sectional Round to the eventual State Champion in Cunningham.

Wetmore went 8-3 overall and the eight wins is more than the previous seven seasons combined as they won seven total from 2015-2021.

Going into the historical win over Burrton, some of the Cardinals statistical leaders included Dierk Hanzlicek rushing for over 1,000 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also passed for 370 yards and added 242 receiving yards and 11 more scores. Kylar Wommack threw for over 830 yards and 14 touchdowns while adding seven rushing touchdowns. Jacob Carls was the Cardinals leading receiver with over 540 yards and nine touchdowns.

Hanzlicek was First Team All-State by Sports in Kansas as a returner/utility player. Wommack and Carls both earned Honorable Mention.

Wetmore’s defense was dominant as well as they held six of their opponents to seven points or less.
