Centralia Sweeps Hiawatha in Pair of Close Finishes

Centralia got the sweep Friday night against Hiawatha. Both games came down to the wire, but the Panthers were able to come out on top in both matchups.

The girls’ game was close early with Hiawatha leading the first quarter most of the way, but the Panthers led by one after the first eight minutes.

The second quarter was dominated by Centralia as their 2-3 Zone defense forced the Redhawks to settle for threes, which they were unable to make.

As a result, the Panthers had a 13-point lead at the half. Hiawatha senior Darcy Lierz stepped up and brought them closer to make it a game in the fourth quarter.

Lierz finished with 28 points including 12 points in the first quarter and nine in the third quarter. Centralia sophomore Oen Deters led the Panthers in scoring with 20 points.

Centralia was able to hold on and win 43-38 to improve their record to 2-1. Hiawatha falls to 2-1 with the loss.

In the boys’ game, it was Centralia who got out to a fast start leading 20-10 after the first quarter. The Redhawks got within six at the half and within three to start the fourth quarter which set up a fun finish.

Brock Kramer, Reese Tanking and Trenton Talley for Centralia scored some big baskets for the Panthers in the final frame to lift themselves past Hiawatha.

The Redhawks had an opportunity to win the game on their final possession, but they turned it over. Centralia was able to hang on by a final score of 50-49.

Talley led all scorers with 23 points. Centralia forward Brock Reinecke also had 13 points with all of them coming in the first quarter.

Hiawatha was led by sophomore Cameron Boswell, who scored 22 points. Senior Zachary Cappleman came off the bench and finished with 13 points.

Centralia remains unbeaten with a 3-0 record. Hiawatha with the loss is now 1-2 on the new season.
