Doniphan West def. Pretty Prairie 25-19, 25-20

The early portion of the first set was back-and-forth with Pretty Prairie having the lead for most of it. The Mustangs would then rattle off five straight points and steal the momentum away from the Bulldogs as they were able to hold on late to win the first set 25-19. Early in the second set, the Bulldogs played well in hopes of forcing a third set getting a quick 6-2 lead. However, Doniphan West would quickly get five straight and wouldn’t look back after that to win the set 25-20.

Doniphan West def. Sylvan-Lucas 23-25, 25-22, 25-17

Doniphan West led most of the first set in the battle of the Mustangs. Both teams made some costly service errors with two of them apiece. One of them which came with D-West up 22-20 and helped Sylvan-Lucas get back into the set. They took advantage and won five of the last six points in the end to take the set 25-23. The second set was back-and-forth all the way to the very end. The points were tied at 7-7, 9-9, 11-11, 12-12, 15-15, 17-17, and 19-19. I might have missed a few ties at the beginning as well.  Doniphan West then scored five points in a row to go up 24-19, but Sylvan-Lucas responded for three in a row to keep it interesting. However, D-West was able to seal the final point after a timeout to get the win. The final set was all about streaks. DW got up 9-2, but Sylvan-Lucas rallied right back to keep it close. However, another well-timed rally for Doniphan West got them back out in front making it 16-9, and they would cruise from there to win the match.

Doniphan West def. St. Francis 25-21, 25-17

The Mustangs controlled the first set for most of the way, but the Indians were able to take a 21-19 lead late. Head coach Andrea Keller called a timeout, and they turned it on after the break scoring the last six points to win 25-21. The second set was close the whole way until the very end when D-West was able to get a late rally to pull ahead and secure the #1 seed in their pool.

The Mustangs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. against either Flinthills or Little River. You can catch the games on KNZA 103.9 FM
