Week 6 Games (*Denotes District Record)

6-Man District 1

(4-1, 3-0*) Wetmore at (5-0, 3-0*) Waverly

Wetmore’s Dierk Hanzlicek now has 901 yards and 17 total touchdowns on the season after their 54-6 mercy rule win over Altoona-Midway last week. Jacob Carls also had another nice night with a pair of touchdowns. The Cardinals’ defense stepped up as well and allowed -10 rushing yards and only 65 passing yards. Wetmore is 4-0 against Kansas teams in 2022.

The Waverly Bulldogs come into this matchup ranked #4 in K-Prep’s 6-Man rankings. Waverly is one of just two unbeaten teams left in 6M with Cunningham being the other. They have dominated everyone so far with a combined score 257-38 and haven’t had anyone get within 28 points of them. In last week’s 55-6 win over Chetopa, Brantley Peterson ran for 119 yards and three touchdowns. Carter Ohl had three touchdowns with two rushing and one receiving.

Brandon’s Pick: Waverly
Justin’s Pick: Waverly
Jared’s Pick: Waverly

8M-I District 5

(1-4, 1-1*) Lincoln at (4-1, 1-1*) Washington County

Washington County is 4-1 to start a season for the first time since 2019 after they won at Bennington last week 50-30. Peyton LeDuc ran for 163 yards and two scores, he added 152 passing yards and two more scores. It’s the second time this season that they’ve scored at least 50 points while it was also the second time, they’ve allowed at least 30 points in a game.

Lincoln is 1-4 to start a season for the first time since 2017 as they were beat 56-6 by Clifton Clyde last week. They lost their first three games of the season before getting their lone win so far in week four against Rock Hills.

These two have played three times in the 2000’s. Washington County is 3-0 with wins in 2005, 2018, and 2019.

Brandon’s Pick: Washington County
Justin’s Pick: Washington County
Jared’s Pick: Washington County

(4-1, 2-0*) Ell Saline at (4-1, 2-0*) Clifton Clyde

Clifton Clyde has now won back-to-back games since their lone loss of the season against Axtell in week three. They won at Lincoln last week 56-6 and have outscored their last two opponents 78-12.

Ell Saline have also won back-to-back games since their lone loss in week three at Little River. The Cardinals beat Rock Hills at home last week 36-18. First time since 2019 that Ell Saline has won at least four of their first five games in a season.

No recent game history between Ell Saline and Clifton Clyde but the winner of this game will be in the driver’s seat and will control their own destiny the rest of the way for a District Title.

Brandon’s Pick: Clifton Clyde
Justin’s Pick: Clifton Clyde
Jared’s Pick: Clifton Clyde

8M-II District 3

(2-3, 2-1, 2-0*) Hanover at (5-0, 3-0, 2-0*) Axtell – KMZA 92.1 FM

After a rough 0-3 start with losses to Clifton-Clyde, Ell-Saline and Osborne, Hanover has bounced back with back-to-back wins at Blue Valley Randolph and vs. Doniphan West last week. It’s been a tale of two seasons so far for Hanover. The opening three weeks, they were outscored 156-28. They outscored their opponents in the last two weeks 100-6.

The stat we love to keep here is Axtell’s points per 48 minutes which has been absurd so far, but it has hit a new level. After their 62-0 halftime win at Blue Valley last week, they are now averaging 108.4 points per 48 minutes. Quarterback Isaac Detweiler went 9-for-12 for 250 yards and six touchdowns. Axtell remains the team to beat in 8M-DII as they continue to top most rankings.

Brandon’s Pick: Axtell
Justin’s Pick: Axtell
Jared’s Pick: Axtell

(1-4, 0-3, 0-2*) Blue Valley at (2-3, 2-1, 2-0*) Frankfort

Blue Valley will look to rebound now with their toughest game on the schedule out of the way. If they were trying to take away some positives, it would likely be towards their running game. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get much going on the ground last week due to playing from behind early.

The Wildcats have started to hit their stride with back-to-back blowout wins after an 0-3 start. The first three games they were outscored 162-38, but they have outscored their last two opponents 105-12 including last week’s win over Linn. Freshman quarterback Wes Anderson is 24-for-33 with 372 yards and 10 total touchdowns in those two wins.

Since 2004, Frankfort has beaten nobody more than Blue Valley with a record of 11-3. The Wildcats haven’t allowed more than 14 points during any of the matchups since 2013. They have outscored the Rams 464-60, and three of the last five meetings have been shutouts.

Brandon’s Pick: Frankfort
Justin’s Pick: Frankfort
Jared’s Pick: Frankfort

(1-4, 0-3, 0-2*) Linn at (1-4, 0-3, 0-2*) Doniphan West

Linn has struggled since their week two win at Logan-Palco. The Bulldogs have been outscored 153-6 in their last three including last week’s 51-6 loss against Frankfort. Linn has lost 10 of their last 11 games dating back to last season.

Doniphan West had a tough go last week against Hanover as they lost 48-0. Their lone win was 68-48 against Maranatha in week three. In their four losses, the Mustangs have been outscored 204-14 with two shutout defeats.

Doniphan West has won the last two meetings against Linn. The Mustangs won 52-14 in 2018 and picked up a forfeit win in 2019.

Brandon’s Pick: Linn
Justin’s Pick: Doniphan West
Jared’s Pick: Doniphan West

1A District 3

(3-2, 2-0*) Jefferson County North at (3-2, 2-0*) St. Mary’s

Jefferson County North picked up a big win last week against Oskaloosa 42-7. They’ve outscored McLouth and Oskaloosa in their last two wins 96-25 since they lost two straight against ACCHS and Wabaunsee.

St. Mary’s is still one of the most talented teams in Class 1A as their two losses this season have come against Rock Creek and Silver Lake in weeks two and three respectively.

This battle between Jefferson County North and St. Mary’s brings two of the three teams in the district entering week six with undefeated district records (Mission Valley).

Brandon’s Pick: St. Mary’s
Justin’s Pick: St. Mary’s
Jared’s Pick: St. Mary’s

(2-3, 2-0*) Mission Valley at (0-5, 0-2*) Oskaloosa

Mission Valley’s game vs. McLouth last week ended at halftime because the Bulldogs didn’t have enough healthy players to continue. The Vikings were leading 29-12 at the time. Quarterback Victor Vargas threw for 253 yards and 3 touchdowns including a 77-yard touchdown to Bryce Bunger. Bunger had 145 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Oskaloosa is coming off a 42-7 loss at Jefferson County North. It’s the fewest points they have allowed so far this season. Head coach Eddie Minor said his kids played hard last week and the score wasn’t indicative of the way they played. The Bears now have their toughest games out of the way and have a chance to string something together. Their final three opponents have a combined record of 4-12.

Brandon’s Pick: Mission Valley
Justin’s Pick: Mission Valley
Jared’s Pick: Oskaloosa

(1-4, 1-1, 0-2*) Valley Falls at (0-5, 0-3, 0-2*) McLouth

The Dragons lost in a tough matchup with St. Mary’s last week and are trying to snap a two-game losing skid. Last week’s 65-14 loss to the Bears was the second time they have given up 60+ points in a game. Valley Falls will try to rebound and get its first win in district play. They are 1-1 against teams with losing records this season.

McLouth has had a rough go in 2022. They continue their hopes to get their first win since the final game of 2019 at Northeast-Arma. They are looking for their first home win since Oct. 12th, 2018, against Central Heights. With last week’s forfeit, they have now forfeited two of their last three games due to lack of players.

Brandon’s Pick: Valley Falls
Justin’s Pick: Valley Falls
Jared’s Pick: Valley Falls

1A District 4

(3-2, 0-2*) Jackson Heights at (4-1, 0-1*) Troy – KNZA 103.9 FM

Jackson Heights is looking to get back on the winning track as they have dropped two in a row since starting the season 3-0. They lost their second straight last week 28-6 against Centralia. First time since the early portions of last season that the Cobra’s have lost back-to-back games.

Troy got back on track after their one-point loss at Centralia in week four as they dominated Maur Hill-Mount Academy last week with a 76-16 win. The Trojans remained at #5 in 1A in K-Prep’s latest rankings this week. Trojans quarterback Reagan Hartman is 9th among all classifications in passing yards entering this week with 1,144.

Jackson Heights has won the last four meetings against Troy including last year 38-15. Before that, Troy had won seven straight in the series from 2004-2013.

Brandon’s Pick: Troy
Justin’s Pick: Troy
Jared’s Pick: Troy

2A District 3

(3-2, 1-0*) Silver Lake at (2-3, 1-1*) Pleasant Ridge

Despite a 3-2 start to the season, Silver Lake is still one of the most talented teams in the State in Class 2A. The Eagles two losses are against Hayden and Rock Creek who are both ranked in their classifications. Silver Lake won a thriller last week in the War on 24 against rival Rossville 21-20 in overtime.

Pleasant Ridge lost last Saturday to ACCHS 36-14. They didn’t have officials who could work the game Friday, so they had to move the game to Saturday afternoon. The Rams have gone loss/win/loss/win/loss so far this season. Running back Lucas Beying is top-20 in all classifications with 730 rushing yards in four games.

Pleasant Ridge is 0-7 against Silver Lake dating back to 2010. Silver Lake won the matchup last season 59-24 and they’ve outscored the Rams in those seven meetings 376-51 including multiple shutouts.

Brandon’s Pick: Silver Lake
Justin’s Pick: Silver Lake
Jared’s Pick: Silver Lake

(4-1, 4-0, 1-1*) ACCHS at (2-3, 2-2, 0-1*) Maur Hill-Mount Academy – KAIR 93.7 FM

ACCHS got back on track last week with their 36-14 win against Pleasant Ridge. Quarterback Bricen Lee combined for nearly 400 total yards and three touchdowns. Trenton Kimmi caught two touchdowns while Matt Worley ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Bricen has been one of the best dual-threat options at quarterback in the state. He’s compiled 1,265 total yards in five games split nearly 50/50 with rush and pass.

MH-MA running back Thomas Rhiza was out during their 76-16 loss to #5 Troy last Friday. They were also missing some wide receivers. Their 76 points allowed is the most since at least 2005, and the first time they allowed 70+ points since their 74-14 playoff loss to Silver Lake in 2014. Some good news is that they will get most of their players back for this week’s game.

This series has been tight dating back to 2006. The Tigers are 9-7 against the Ravens. Their 42-29 win over MH-MA last season snapped a streak of seven straight wins by the Ravens going back to 2014.

Brandon’s Pick: ACCHS
Justin’s Pick: ACCHS
Jared’s Pick: ACCHS

2A District 4

(1-4, 0-1*) Riley County at (1-4, 0-2*) Horton

Riley County had a tough go against Sabetha last week as they were shutout 35-0 by the Bluejays. They gave up nearly 400 rushing yards in the game. The lone win for the Falcons was against Royal Valley in week four. The four losses for Riley County have come against Silver Lake, Rossville, Rock Creek, and Sabetha.

Horton hasn’t been able to find stability since snapping their lengthy losing streak back in week two. Since the win over McLouth, they’ve been outscored 176-20 against Valley Falls, Nemaha Central, and Minneapolis.

Brandon’s Pick: Riley County
Justin’s Pick: Riley County
Jared’s Pick: Riley County

(3-2, 1-1*) Minneapolis at (5-0, 1-0*) Nemaha Central

Minneapolis has been playing tough against good opponents this season with tonight being their third game against a ranked team. Last week, though, was a comfortable 64-0 win vs. Horton which snapped a two-game losing skid.

Thunder running back Cooper Hajek had five touchdowns in their 67-6 win at Jefferson West last Friday. He will likely eclipse the 1,000-yard mark this week as he needs just 81 yards. He is sixth in the entire state among all classifications in rushing yards with more than the likes of four-star recruits Dylan Edwards from Derby who is committed to Notre Dame and John Randle Jr. from Wichita Heights who has offers from 20+ Power 5 schools. Quarterback Brayden Uphaus didn’t start last week and instead it was Cooper’s little brother Carter who got the nod.

Brandon’s Pick: Nemaha Central
Justin’s Pick: Nemaha Central
Jared’s Pick: Nemaha Central

3A District 4

(1-4, 1-3, 0-2*) Perry Lecompton at (0-5, 0-4, 0-1*) Jefferson West

The Kaws have gone through a gauntlet part of their schedule as they have lost three in a row to teams with a combined record of 14-1 entering this week. They’ve lost to Nemaha Central, Holton and Hayden last week 44-28.

Jefferson West is still looking for their first win of 2022 as they lost last week to Nemaha Central 67-6. The last three opponents the Tigers have faced have a combined record of 14-1 with Sabetha, Hayden, and Nemaha Central.

Perry Lecompton is 7-5 against Jefferson West dating back to 2006. They’ve won back-to-back games against the Tigers the last two seasons by a combined score of 94-12.

Brandon’s Pick: Perry Lecompton
Justin’s Pick: Perry Lecompton
Jared’s Pick: Perry Lecompton

(1-4, 0-1*) Royal Valley at (5-0, 2-0*) Hayden

Royal Valley has now lost back-to-back games since their lone win in week three. Last week they hung tough before losing to Holton 48-15. 2017 was the last season that Royal Valley had won at least two of their first five games of the season.

Hayden built a 22-point lead at halftime against Perry Lecompton last week before getting the win 44-28. Jett Wahlmeier threw for 193 yards and a touchdown while Finn Dunshee ran for 111 yards and a touchdown.

This will be the first meeting between Royal Valley and Hayden since 2013. Between 2004-2013, Hayden went 8-0 against the Panthers and didn’t allow more than 16 points in any of those games.

Brandon’s Pick: Hayden
Justin’s Pick: Hayden
Jared’s Pick: Hayden

3A District 5

(4-1, 1-0*) Rock Creek at (2-3, 0-2*) Hiawatha – Hiawatha Channel

Rock Creek remains one of the top teams in 3A as they improved to 4-1 last week with a 56-21 win against Marysville. Mustangs quarterback Dalton Whitworth has the second most passing yards in the state entering this week with 1,552 while his wide receiver Ethan Burgess has the second most receiving yards in the state with 777. Against Marysville, Whitworth threw for 298 yards and three scores while Burgess caught 17 passes for 234 yards and three scores.

Hiawatha’s struggles continued last week with a 38-12 loss at Concordia. They’ve now lost three straight since the 2-0 start and have battled numerous injuries all season including at quarterback. It’s the first time in two seasons that the Redhawks have lost three consecutive games.

Rock Creek and Hiawatha have played in each of the last two seasons. Mustangs won both 48-0 last season and 51-12 in 2020.

Brandon’s Pick: Rock Creek
Justin’s Pick: Rock Creek
Jared’s Pick: Rock Creek

Non-District

(4-1) Holton at (2-3) Rossville – Holton Channel

It's a non-district game between teams that haven't played since 1995 before Coach Brooks Barta took over at Holton. Last week, Barta notched his 250th career win with the Wildcats as Holton rolled Royal Valley 48-15. Holton was missing a handful of starters including their top three running backs and will still be without at least three top starters this week. Jace Boswell shifted from fullback to tailback and ran for 119 yards and four touchdowns against the Panthers while Tucker Gilliland got his first start and ran for 104 and a score in Holton's fourth straight win.

Rossville was stunned after leading almost the entire game against rival Silver Lake, only to give up a touchdown in the final minute to tie the game and then after a Bulldog TD in overtime, the Eagles scored and converted a two-point pass to earn the win 22-21 last week.  The back-to-back 2A State Champs from Rossville are now 2-3 this season with junior QB Camden Horak leading the charge with 453 yards rushing and 707 yards passing.

Brandon’s Pick: Holton
Justin’s Pick: Holton
Jared’s Pick: Rossville

(5-0) Centralia at (3-2) Garden Plain

Centralia’s defense was the story last week in their 28-6 win over Jackson Heights. They gave up a touchdown on the opening drive and wouldn’t surrender a point the rest of the game. They are now 5-0 for the first time since 2014 with their sturdy defense allowing just nine points per game. Their offense will need to step it up this week, though, as Garden Plain’s defense is allowing just 13 points per game.

The Owls’ offense is coming off a promising 45-18 win at Haven last week, but it has been shaky this season. They have three games where they have scored less than 10 points including a 6-0 opening week win at Conway Springs. The other two games they were able to score 40+ points. Their win last week was their only win over a team that is currently over .500. They are 0-2 against teams that have at least four wins.

Brandon’s Pick: Centralia
Justin’s Pick: Garden Plain
Jared’s Pick: Garden Plain

(4-1, 2-1) Sabetha at (3-2, 1-2) Riverside – Sabetha Channel

Sabetha was very impressive last week with a 35-0 shutout win at Riley County. The rushed for 400 yards with Josh Herrmann leading the way with 237 yards and three touchdowns. The Bluejays jumped into K-Prep’s rankings for the first time this season at #4 in Class 2A behind only Southeast of Saline, Nemaha Central, and Kingman. Sabetha plays at Nemaha Central in the final game of the regular season.

The Cyclones got their first road win of the season after their 34-9 win at Onaga last week. Their defense gave up just 118 total yards to the Buffaloes while forcing three turnovers. Riverside’s offense was led by Percy Duncan as he ran for 75 yards with three touchdowns and had 6 receptions for 136 yards with two more scores. Riverside’s magic number for touchdowns is four. They are 3-0 when they get four scores, but 0-2 when they fail to do so.

Brandon’s Pick: Sabetha
Justin’s Pick: Sabetha
Jared’s Pick: Riverside

(2-3) Valley Heights at (1-4) Marysville

Valley Heights sophomore running back Jayden DeWalt found the endzone for the fifth consecutive week, but he was held under 100 yards. The Mustangs’ offense was only able to generate 125 yards of offense in their 27-6 loss at Sacred Heart. Valley Heights will look for more balance offensively this week as they have only been able to score 23 or more points once this year.

The Marysville Bulldogs were unable to follow up their Week 4 win over Concordia with another as they fell 56-21 at Rock Creek last week. It was their first loss where they scored 10+ points. After scoring just 7.6 points per game in their first three games, they have averaged 24.5 points in their last two.

Brandon’s Pick: Valley Heights
Justin’s Pick: Marysville
Jared’s Pick: Valley Heights

(4-1, 4-0) Highland Park at (5-0, 4-0) Atchison

Highland Park is in the Meadowlark Conference for the first time as the Scots were added before the season. They came from the Centennial League which played the likes of Manhattan, Junction City, and other Topeka area schools. The Scots dropped their lone game of the season so far last week to Lincoln Prep out of Missouri 59-22. They’ve run through league play and have the second leading rusher in the state with Tre Richardson who’s already over 1,000 yards and is getting D1 offers.

Atchison will look to stay undefeated as they have run through all their opponents so far including last week’s 55-6 win at KC Washington. The Phoenix offense is averaging over 53 points per game while the defense is giving up just 12.8 points per game.

Atchison beat Highland Park last season 47-36.

Brandon’s Pick: Highland Park
Justin’s Pick: Atchison
Jared’s Pick: Atchison

(1-4, 0-2) Onaga at (1-2) Christ Prep

The Onaga Buffaloes have been banged up a bit this season at multiple positions in their first year in 11-man since 2015. Jackson Kolterman is currently leading the offense and head coach Ben Kolterman said they are still learning what he can and can’t do. He is the third quarterback the team has used this season due to injuries to their other two QBs. Onaga had a tough second half last week in their 34-9 loss against Riverside.

The Patriots are facing just their fourth opponent of the season after back-to-back bye weeks. Christ Prep is playing just their second and final Kansas opponent after losing 40-0 to Centralia in Week 2.

Brandon’s Pick: Christ Prep Academy
Justin’s Pick: Christ Prep Academy
Jared’s Pick: Christ Prep Academy
