Highland Men & Women Both Have 1-1 Week on the Court

Highland Scotties basketball squads played host to Coffeyville and Independence community college's this week and it was a split for both the men and women's Scotties on the hardwood.

Lady Scotties

The Lady Scotties who where ranked number one in the country fell to number five in the national polls after back-to-back losses. Earlier this week against Coffeyville CC the Scotties responded after those losses with a nice win at home 69-52. Highland opened up with 41-29 lead at the half and went on to outscore Coffeyville by five more in the second half to put them away for their 17 win of the season.

Lady Scotties were lead by three players in double figures as sophomore, Tamiya Green lead the way with 23 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore's, Rylie Bowser and Janelle Saling each added 10 points on the night as the Scotties shot 40.9% from the floor.

Highland then faced off with Independence CC later this week and fell for the third time this season, as Independence lead 25-21 at the half and outscored Highland by three more in the second half to grab the 58-51 win.

Scotties in the loss was lead by sophomore, Royce Shields who tallied 18 points as the only Scottie in double figures with no other Highland player scoring more than six points in the loss. With the loss the Lady Scotties are now 17-3 on the season and ranked five in the nation.

Highland takes a break from action for a few days until when they return to the hardwood on Wednesday when they take on Neosho County CC on the road in Chanute, Kansas at 6:00pm.

Men Scotties

Just like their counterparts in the Lady Scotties the men of the Highland had a 1-1 week on the court with action against Coffeyville and Independence community college's.

The Scotties opened the week with a loss to Coffeyville but it was a tight ballgame down to the wire, with Coffeyville holding onto a 77-74 win on the road. Highland found themselves down at the half 42-39 and played Coffeyville even in the second half, just missing the win by a few points.

Highland had a solid shooting night as they were 41% from the floor and 38.5% form behind the arc and finished with four players in double figures. Freshman, Bryant Fultz lead the way with a double-double, tallying 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Jaleni Neely and Martell Collins both freshman each added 11 points, while freshman, Brad Waterman chipped in 10 points.

Scotties responded from that Coffeyville loss earlier in the week to take down Independence CC in overtime after battling back from a halftime deficit. Down 43-29 at the half, Highland used a 38-24 second half to tie the game up and force overtime where they outscored Independence by 10 points, 14-4, to win the game 81-71.

Four players finished the night with double figure games with freshman, James Walker leading the way with 20 points. Fultz added another double-double as he registered 17 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman, Kris Smith chipped in 15 points and Collins added another double figure night with 11 points, as Highland shot 43.8% from the floor.

With the 1-1 week Highland now sits at 11-8 on the year and get a little bit of a break from action until next Wednesday when they head to Chanute, Kansas to take on Neosho County CC at 8:00pm.
