The Hiawatha football team improved to 2-0 on Friday night as they won at Jefferson West 26-7.

The Redhawks defense was the key as there was just one offensive touchdown in the game. After Ashton Rockey took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, Ty Willich capped a 32 yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run.

They led the Tigers (0-2) 13-0 going into the second quarter and led 20-0 at halftime behind a 15-yard interception return touchdown by Willich.

Xavier Oldham added two field goals in the second half as the Redhawks finished with 223 yards of offense.

Jefferson West was held to just 60 total yards and they also added five turnovers which gives them 12 in their first two games of the season.

The Tigers lone score was an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown by Sam Broxterman.

Hiawatha lost starting quarterback Brandt Barnhill in the first quarter to a leg injury and did not return.

Willich was our Citizen's State Bank and Trust Company player of the game as he had a pick-six, a rushing touchdown, two sacks, and a blocked punt.
