The Sabetha Bluejays opened up the 2022 season on Friday night with a 28-14 victory over Perry Lecompton.

The Bluejays avenged their loss last season as the Kaws eliminated Sabetha in the first round of the playoffs.

The rushing attack was the difference in the game as Sabetha was able to control the line of scrimmage from the start.

Bluejays scored on their opening drive of the game as Jonathan Renyer scored from 11 yards out to make it 7-0.

Neither team could find points the rest of the half as Sabetha held their 7-0 lead at the break.

Sabetha would extend the lead out to 14-0 early in the third quarter as Colin Menold scored from 15 yards out.

Perry Lecompton bounced back with a 63 yard touchdown drive capped off by a touchdown reception from Kael Gorski from quarterback Gunnar Ball.

Sabetha would score the next two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Renyer found the endzone again and then Matthew Garber added a touchdown pass to Christian McAfee to make it 28-7 late in the game.

The Kaws would add a touchdown with 11 seconds to go to end the game at 28-14.

Sabetha rushed for 276 yards and averaged over five yards per carry. Josh Herrmann led the attack with 24 carries for 150 yards.

Renyer finished with 16 carries 66 yards and two touchdowns while Menold added 43 yards and a touchdown.

Sabetha travels to Holton in week two while Perry Lecompton has their home opener against Riverside.
