Valley Heights Girls Cruise Through Sub-State to Advance to 2A State Tourney
By Brandon Tadtman

The Valley Heights girls basketball team rolled through their 2A Sub-State in Belleville to advance to the 2A State Tournament in Manhattan later this week.

The Mustangs were the top-seed and opened Sub-State at home with a 70-15 win over Republic County.

They would hang another 70-spot in their Semi-Final win over Bennington 74-40 on Thursday night.

They clinched their spot in Manhattan on Saturday night in the Title Game with a 51-37 win over 6-seed St. Mary's.

"I'm very proud of the effort our girls have put into this season, says head coach Jordan Broxterman. "We have a talented class of seniors that have had a lot of success the last few years and it's great to see them get another crack at the state tournament."

The Mustangs enter the State Tournament with a 21-2 record and earned the 5-seed and will play 4-seed (21-1) Berean Academy. Their only loss this season was to undefeated Sterling who holds the top-seed in what is a loaded field this year in MHK.

"We will have a tough challenge in the first round against Berean Academy, who only has one loss to undefeated Sterling," says Broxterman. "I know our girls will come ready to play and give it their all to finish the season."

Last season Valley Heights lost in the State Semi-Finals to St. Mary's Colgan 40-38 so they certainly have unfinished business.

"They're competitors and want to win night in and night out."

The opener against Berean Academy will be at 4:00 PM on Wednesday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.
