3A Sub-State: Nemaha Central Girls Survive Sabetha to Advance
By Brandon Tadtman

The Nemaha Central girls basketball team advanced to the 3A Sub-State Semi-Finals in Silver Lake as they held off Sabetha 33-32 at home on Tuesday night.

Both teams struggled to score through the first three quarters. Nemaha Central led 6-4 at the end of the first quarter but Sabetha used a 10-3 second quarter advantage to lead 14-9 at halftime.

The teams combined for 11 points in the third quarter as Nemaha Central crawled back within two points at 18-16 heading to the fourth quarter.

Nemaha Central jumped out and opened up a nine point lead midway through the fourth and seemed to be putting the game away.

However, Sabetha didn't go away quietly with two big three's from Lexi Hayden and Mikenna Haverkamp with under a minute left as the Bluejays fought all the way back to get within two.

After fouling Nemaha Central's Addy Holthaus with around 10 seconds to go, Holthaus buried two huge free throws to get the lead back to four. Sabetha would hit a deep three as time expired but it wasn't enough as they lost by one.

Nemaha Central was led by Holthaus who finished the game with 15 points while Taryn Ganstrom added nine.

Sabetha was led by Emily Krebs with nine while Mary Lukert added seven points and 10 rebounds.

Nemaha Central improves to 16-5 and will play Hiawatha at Silver Lake Friday night in the Sub-State Semi-Finals. Sabetha's season comes to an end with a record of 9-12.
