Highland CC Lady Scotties Move to Number One in National Polls

It was a great season on the hardwood last year for the Lady Scotties of Highland Community College with a 28-4 finish and as high as a number four ranking in the national polls and you thought that was pretty impressive. Well take a look at what coach BJ Smith has his squad of only nine gals doing this season on the court, as the Lady Scotties have propelled themselves to number one in the country after starting the season 14-0. The Scotties jumped into the number spot before playing Labette CC last night, who they took down 75-28, to improve to 15-0 on the season.

“I am really excited for our young ladies, nobody works harder than this team, but we will continue to focus on trying to improve every day and be at our best come play-off time,” said head coach BJ Smith.

The number one ranking for the Lady Scotties is believed to be the first time in school history that the team as achieved that plateau. Highland has compiled an impressive season thus far as they opened the year surpassing the century mark in the first two games, then later in the season beat the then number one team a league rival, Johnson County CC, 59-56.

The impressive portions of the season came be compounded statistical for the Lady Scotties who average 81.5 points per game to their opponents 45.5 points per game this season. One big reason the Scotties outscore their opponents by a big margin is their close to plus 13 rebound margin against their opponents. Lady Scotties, also consistently share the ball with an average of over 15 assists per game while they snatch up close to 16 steals per contest.

The distribution of the ball game also be season in the scoring by the nine gals on this years team, none of which who average less than three points per game and three of which who are averaging double figures. Carina Jackson, Tamiya Green and Janelle Saling lead the way for the Lady Scotties averaging 15.5, 13.2 and 12 points per game this season. Both Ashley Torres and Jaaron Kassanavoid both average over nine points per game, while Holton products the Bowser sisters Ryann and Rylie average eight and six points each.

Lady Scotties continue their stellar season on Saturday when they hit the road and face off against Brown Mackie at 1:00pm.
