Following recent events at Atchison County Community High School, the school made the decision Monday night to relieve head football coach Corey Thomas of his duties.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Thomas was still employed as a teacher at the school.

ACCHS Superintendent Andrew Gaddis released the following statement regarding the matter.

"The board of education met and determined that Corey Thomas will not serve as the head football coach at the present time," Gaddis said. "He remains an employee of the district and will continue with his other contractual duties."

The move comes after Thomas was notified Thursday of last week that he had been suspended from the program and unable to coach in the Tigers 34-20 win at McLouth Friday night.

Thomas released the following statement regarding his termination.

“I will truly miss my athletes and the time spent with them,” Thomas said. “They are in good hands with my assistant coaches and they all have bright futures ahead of them."

Following the dismissal of Thomas, Paul Courter has been named the interim head coach. He has been an assistant for Thomas since his first year in 2017.

ACCHS is scheduled to host Nemaha Central in the opening game of district play Friday night.
