Area high school volleyball teams opened the 2020 fall sports season on Saturday in a pair of tournaments and at the Marysville Invitational it was Sabetha who began the season with a first-place finish after going 4-0 on the day.
The Lady Jays opened the tournament with a 3-0 record in pool play with two-set wins over Valley Heights, Chapman, and Riley County.
That propelled Sabetha straight to the championship match against Nemaha Central which the Lady Jays won in three sets.
The Thunder reached the title match by going 3-0 in pool play as well, racking up wins over Concordia, Washington County and Marysville.
Despite a loss to Sabetha in pool play, Valley Heights was able to finish the tournament 3-1 to take third place with a two-set victory over Marysville in the third-place match.
The only other area team in action at Marysville was Washington County who finished the tournament with a 1-2 record on the day.
