Two Individuals Claim State Titles, 11 Individuals Place at 2020 State Wrestling

The 2020 Kansas State Wrestling Championships wrapped up Saturday afternoon and out of 24 area wrestlers in action at state, two captured state championships while 11 total placed in Class 4A at Salina and 321A in Hays.

In Class 4A the Holton Wildcats dominated with three guys placing in the top five of their respective weight class led by Konnor Tannahill who captured the 195-pound title with a perfect 4-0 tournament. He picked up all four wins via pin including a pin in the championship in just 1:51 beating the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked wrestlers in the state in the process ending his junior campaign with a record of 31-6. Tannahill will look to join select company in Jesse Strawn and Lucas Lovvorn as the only wrestlers in Holton history to win back to back individual titles next year.

While Tannahill claimed a state title the Cats also got a second-place finish from Kolby Roush at 138 pounds as he fell by major decision in the title match ending his season with a 28-4 record. Holton was rounded out by Jake Barnes who claimed fifth with a 3-2 record at state.

The only other state placer in Class 4A came from Atchison’s Nick Funk who claimed fourth place falling in the third-place match to Santa Fe Trail senior Evan Dean who broke the state record for pins this season.

In the 321A classification there was just one state championship which came from Riverside’s Luke Horn who claimed the 160-pound weight class with three pins in the tournament before earning a close 2-1 decision in the championship match.

The Cyclones also had Luke’s brother Beau place at state as he claimed third at 138 pounds with a 5-1 mark in the tournament which included a pair of pins and three wins by close decision.

Doniphan West added two more state placers in Hays as Nathaniel Howerton finished runner-up at 182 pounds to lead the Mustangs as he finished the season with a record of 34-3. After Howerton the Mustangs also got a sixth-place finish from Carter Jensen who went 3-3 in the tournament including a loss via pin the fifth-place match.

The only other team with multiple placers was Perry Lecompton who had two as Hayden Robb took fifth at 220 pounds with a 4-2 tournament while Grant Roush was sixth at 152 pounds with a 2-3 tournament record.

The final state placer from 2020 state wrestling came from Sabetha’s Kaden Dillon who claimed fifth place at 152 pounds with a 4-2 tournament record including a win via pin in his fifth-place match.
