#4 Sabetha Baseball and Golf Goes Back-to-Back

What a run it’s been for high school sports in Sabetha the last two years with six combined state championships including back-to-back in football, baseball and golf.

This year “Title-town” continued to produce state championships as the Bluejays’ baseball and golf teams each captured state championships earning Sabetha the No. 4 moment on our countdown.

The Bluejays’ golf team captured the Class 3A State Championship in Emporia as a team for the second straight and even had an individual state champion as David Pierson won the individual title with a 76.

Jesse Burger also finished one stroke behind to take second, as he won a playoff against four other golfers.

Sabetha was rounded out by Marcus Funk who shot an 85 to take 22nd, while Riley Lierz was 36th with an 89.

Just a few days later the Sabetha baseball team capped off back-to-back state titles with a 10-4 win over Rock Creek in the title game.

It was nowhere near an easy road to the championship for the Bluejays who had to erase a 3-0 deficit in the semifinals before coming back to take down Minneapolis 9-5.

It capped off a magical 21-3 season for the Bluejays’ baseball team who won their second state title in just their third year of existence as a sport.

Senior Joe Gruber earned Class 3A Player of the Year honors in the process by the KABC along with head coach Aaron Frey being named the Coach of the Year.
