For the second straight year ACCHS opened up the season with a win over Oskaloosa as the Tigers outscored the Bears 30-6 in the second half last week to earn a 56-12 win. The Tigers rushed for over 400 yards in the contest and had two players rush for 150 yards as Tucker Smith ran for 186 and two touchdowns while Trystin Myers added 160 yards and four touchdowns on just four carries. Grant Amon also rushed for a pair of TD’s behind the dominate line.

Last year’s meeting was the first since 2011 and was a 0-0 tie at halftime, but Jackson Heights took control and outscored the Tigers 38-0 in the second half.

Jonny’s Pick: Jackson Heights
Justin’s Pick: Jackson Heights

McLouth (0-1) at Jeff County North (1-0)

McLouth is looking to bounce back after a tough 42-0 week one loss to Maur Hill-Mount Academy giving up over 375 yards of offense. The Bulldogs suited up just 11 guys and are struggling with only 15 total players on the roster this season.

Jeff County North started the season strong by outscoring Pleasant Ridge 22-0 in the second half adding to just a two-point halftime lead to win 38-12. Logan Budy scored twice on the ground while Landon Gutschenritter caught a 65-yard touchdown and had a 60-yard pick six.

McLouth took last season’s meeting 28-12 which snapped a streak of three straight wins for Jeff County North.

Justin’s Pick: JCN

Oskaloosa (0-1) at MH-MA (1-0)

Oskaloosa struggled in week one giving up over 400 yards of rushing offense in a 56-12 loss to ACCHS. The Bears couldn’t figure out a way to stop big plays as the Tigers had five rushing scores of over 30 yards and one kick return touchdown as well. Oskaloosa scored their two touchdown on a pair of passes from Chord Perry.

Maur Hill-Mount Academy couldn’t have started the season any better scoring on their first four possessions of the game in route to a 42-0 win in their season opener at McLouth. Jack Caudle threw for four touchdowns including two to tight end Abe Siebenmorgen while Andrew Schwinn and Dylan Smith each recorded rushing touchdowns. Sophomore Drew Caudle hooked up with his brother for 97 yards receiving and a touchdown while junior Brody Mispagel added a receiving score.

The Ravens blanked Oskaloosa a season ago 48-0 which was the first meeting between the two schools since the 2013 season.

Jonny’s Pick: MH-MA
Justin’s Pick: MH-MA

Onaga (1-0) at Frankfort (1-0)

It’s a matchup of a pair of 1-0 teams after the Buffaloes beat up on Valley Falls last week 56-20 while the Wildcats had little problems with Linn winning 52-0. Onaga outscored Valley Falls 42-6 in the second half to break a 14-14 tie at halftime and go on for the convincing win. Ethan Powell ran for 168 yards and four touchdowns for Onaga while Zach Fisher added 121 yards and a score. Powell also had a huge game defensively recording 4.5 tackles for loss to go along with one sack and eight total tackles.

Frankfort couldn’t have had a better start to 2019 jumping out to a 22-0 lead after the first quarter and never looking back in a game that ended at halftime. Branden Bussman ran for 160 yards and four touchdowns while Gavin Cornleison ran for two and threw for two. The Wildcats were also without 1,000-yard rusher Garrett Dalinghaus in week one due to injuries, but he is expected to be in the lineup Friday night.

The Wildcats won handily a year ago 52-6 and have won the last three meetings between the two schools.

Jonny’s Pick: Frankfort
Justin’s Pick: Frankfort

Blue Valley (0-1) at Axtell (1-0)

Blue Valley struggled in week one against a very good Rock Hills team that scored 38 points in the opening quarter before going on to beat the Rams by a 78-28 final. The Rams couldn’t find a way to stop the run game of Rock Hills as they allowed nearly 600 rushing yards

The Rams will face an Axtell team that outscored St. John-Tipton in week one 44-6 in the second half to win easily 58-12. The Eagles senior quarterback Quinn Buessing picked up right where he left off last season throwing for 207 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for four more scores. Axtell’s defense proved to be the difference last week forcing five turnovers which led to fourth quarter touchdowns.

Axtell dominated last season’s meeting 64-12 and has won the last seven meetings dating back to 2011.

Jonny’s Pick: Axtell
Justin’s Pick: Axtell

Doniphan West (0-1) at Hanover (1-0)

It wasn't a win, but Doniphan West sure had a chance to tie and take the lead in the fourth quarter last week before a few dropped passes and mistakes ultimately led to a tough 42-34 loss at Washington County. The Mustangs played hard in Coach Perry Smith's debut with sophomore quarterback Trent Spiker rushing for 167 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing a TD pass and Nathan Howerton surpassed 100 yards rushing.

Despite struggling in the first half and being up just 20-14 Hanover outscored Pike Valley 38-0 in the second half to win their 39th straight game. The Wildcats are now just two wins away from the all-time 8-man record as they look to defend their three straight state titles.

Jonny’s Pick: Hanover
Justin’s Pick: Hanover

Nemaha Central (0-1) at Hiawatha (0-1) on 103.9 KNZA

The Thunder beat Hiawatha 38-14 last season and have won eight straight against the Redhawks. This year, both teams lost a tight week one battle and Hiawatha is battling severe illness in their school/community that has caused several players to miss practice time this week.  The Hawks fell 14-13 at Riverside last Friday after missing a tying PAT in the fourth quarter. Michael Moreno was a bright spot with seven receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown catch as well as a 65-yard punt return to the house. Tyler Brockoff battled through a bum ankle to complete 11-24 passes for 162 yards but Hiawatha netted only 30 total rushing yards and had five turnovers.

Nemaha Central suffered a heartbreaking loss in week one falling to the defending state champion Sabetha Bluejays at home 13-6. After Tyler Gerety's 90-yard kick return to begin the game giving Nemaha Central a 6-0 lead Sabetha scored 13 unanswered points including two fourth quarter field goals. The Thunder had chances throughout starting three drives inside of the Sabetha 35-yard line but couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the end zone. Gerety was the lone bright spot for the Thunder finishing with 195 kick return yards and the one touchdown.

Jonny’s Pick: Nemaha Central
Justin’s Pick: Nemaha Central

Perry Lecompton (1-0) at Holton (0-1) on Holton Channel

Perry Lecompton is coming off a 68-0 shutout against Royal Valley for the second straight season and not only did the Kaw defense pitched another shutout, but they had three scoop and score touchdowns. Thad Metcalfe ran for 129 yards and had five total touchdowns in the game and Billy Welch was 11-12 for 174 yards passing with two scores while Hayden Robb posted 13 tackles to pace the defense.

Perry blanked Holton 46-0 last year for their first win against the Cats since 2008. The Wildcats are coming off a tough week one loss this year falling 7-0 at Jeff West. The Wildcat defense played great, but the offense didn't run one play inside the Tigers 20-yard-line. It looked like Holton was headed to overtime before a 41-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left gave the Tigers the win. Holton ran for 195 yards with quarterback Kale Purcell leading the way with 63 yards, including a 39-yard scamper late in the fourth quarter.

Jonny’s Pick: Perry Lecompton
Justin’s Pick: Perry Lecompton

Riverside (1-0) at Sabetha (1-0) on Sabetha Channel

Riverside is flying high after eeking out a 14-13 win against Hiawatha to give Coach Byce Paden a victory in his first game. Sophomore QB Kobe Davis was 12-18 for 134 yards and tossed a touchdown, but still, the Cyclones had five turnovers.

Sabetha's 21st consecutive win was anything but easy, but the Bluejays got the job done against their Nemaha County Big 7 League rivals in Seneca 13-6. Linus Krauss is a foreign exchange student from Germany and kicked a pair of second half field goals as well as making a PAT in the first frame after the Jays marched the ball downfield for the only offensive touchdown of the game. Gabe Garber scored the Bluejay TD and the Sabetha defense pitched a shutout while winning the turnover battle 4-0.

Sabetha has won all seven meetings against Riverside while outscoring the Cyclones 170-6 the last three years combined.

Jonny’s Pick: Sabetha
Justin’s Pick: Sabetha

Jeff West (1-0) at Royal Valley (0-1)

Things snowballed quickly after the Panthers found themselves trailing 27-0 at the end of one quarter last week against Perry Lecompton and Royal Valley ended week one with seven turnovers.  The Panthers look to hit the rest button in their home opening.

Quinn Neuenswander found Pene Saili from 41-yards out in the final seconds last Friday to give the Tigers a late rally and win for the second straight year against Holton.  Jeff West still managed less than 100 yards of total offense and hurt themselves with 10 penalties. Coach Steve Johnson learned this week they will be without star senior lineman Gavin Schwinn for the rest of the season.  The Tigers have now won 5 of the last 7 against Royal Valley after ending a two-year drought with a 54-14 win in Meriden last year.

Jonny’s Pick: Jeff West
Justin’s Pick: Jeff West

Valley Heights (1-0) at Horton (0-1)

Horton was only down 7-0 against Jackson Heights midway through the second quarter before things unraveled last week in a eventual 46-8 loss.  The Chargers are playing a lot of underclassmen a t the skill spots and a few more youngsters could see more varsity snaps this week.

Valley Heights was dominant in week one jumping out to a 52-0 lead in a 52-7 blowout of TVL foe Troy. Cole Coggins ran for two TD's while Trey Martin added two for the Mustangs. Valley Heights played a near flawless defensive game picking off five passes and forcing six turnovers all together. The Mustangs blanked the Chargers last season 44-0 in what was the two schools first meeting.

Jonny’s Pick: Valley Heights
Justin’s Pick: Valley Heights

Pleasant Ridge (0-1) at Troy (0-1)

Both teams are coming off disappointing week one losses.  Troy turned the football over six times and could only muster a late touchdown in a  52-7 setback at Valley Heights.  The Trojans avoided the shutout with a Kipp Jasper to Tate Smith one-yard hookup in the fourth frame and the Troy defense struggled to get off the field with a lot of new starters.

Pleasant Ridge is looking to bounce back after a tough week one loss to Jeff County North 38-12 in a game where the Rams trailed just 16-12 at halftime before being shutout in the second half and outscored 22-0. Conner Gibson threw for 114 yards and two touchdowns in the loss but threw three interceptions in the second half.

In their first meeting since 2009 as former Delaware Valley League powerhouse rivals, Troy beat P-Ridge last year 18-0 last year in a mudfest that showcased nine turnovers, seven against the Rams.

Jonny’s Pick: Troy
Justin’s Pick: Troy

It was a tale of two halves for Valley Falls last week after being tied 14-14 at halftime against Onaga. Jonny’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde
Justin’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde

Last year’s meeting came down to the wire and it was the Longhorns who blanked the Tigers in a 12-0 victory.

Jonny’s Pick: Thunder Ridge
Justin’s Pick: Thunder Ridge

St. John-Tipton (0-1) at Linn (0-1)

Both teams are looking to bounce back after tough week one losses. Linn struggled early and often in 52-0 loss to Frankfort that lasted just two quarters. The Bulldogs did collect two turnovers in the game, but the offense couldn’t get anything going against an experience Frankfort defense.

St. John-Tipton played well for a half last week and trailed just 14-6 at halftime to Axtell before the Eagles turned it on in the second half to win 58-12. The Bluejays dominated last season’s meeting by blanking the Bulldogs 47-0.

Jonny’s Pick: St. John-Tipton
Justin’s Pick: St. John-Tipton

Jonny’s Pick: Southern Cloud
Justin’s Pick: Southern Cloud

Clay Center (1-0) at Marysville (1-0)

The Bulldogs were dominant in last season’s meeting holding Clay Center to just six points in a 32-6 beat down.

Jonny’s Pick: Marysville
Justin’s Pick: Marysville

Atchison (0-1) at KC Schlagle (0-0) on KAIR 93.7 FM
