Sabetha Boys Golf Wins 3A State Title, Frankfort Is Runner-up in 1A Leading Area State Performances

The final week of spring sports for 2018 season opened up this week with the State boys golf tournaments across the State on Monday. Area golfers competed in Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A and all put forth strong performances. 

Leading the area performances were the Sabetha Bluejays who flew high posting a team score of 320 to win the Class 3A State team title winning by two-strokes in Seneca. Jesse Burger posted the best Bluejay score finishing with a 76 to place fifth out of 104 golfers, while David Pierson carded a 77 to finish in the top 10 at eighth. Garrett Scott tied for 13th with an 80, while Tanner Ukele, Carson Ukele and Riley Lierz tied for 35th, tied for 44th and tied for 71st with round of 87, 90 and 99.

Also in Class 3A Nemaha Central Thunder placed ninth as a team with a 366 score and were led by Dalton Schmelzle who tied for 20th with an 83. Eric Hammes tied for 44th for the Thunder with a 90, while Hunter Feldkamp (96) tied for 63rd, Cassidy Corby (97) placed 68th, Billy Mitchell (103) and Gregory Sperfaslage (103) both tied for 80th. Maur Hill-Mount Academy had both Riley Funk and Isaac Henderson compete at State and tied for 20th and tied for 69th with rounds of 83 and 98, respectively. Royal Valley Panther, Corey Humpert (101) tied for 77th, while Caden Lillie (102) of Hiawatha to take 79th and Cole Bottom (108) of Horton tied for 92nd. 

In Class 1A competition took place in Dodge City and the Frankfort Wildcats earned a State runner-up finish as a team with a score do 362 finishing 15 strokes back from the top spot. Austin Hardwick shot an 82 to lead the Wildcats placing fourth, while Josh Tynon tied for 13th with a 99 and Aiden Grestner tied for 20th with a 94. Both Brandon Anderson and Branden Bussmann each shot a 96 to tie for 23rd, while Spencer Dressman (100) finished tied for 41st. 

Centralia Panthers also competed as a team at State in Class 1A and tied for ninth with a team score of 396. Nathan Haufler led the Panthers as he tied for 20th with a 94, while Nathan Rempe and Kenton Talley each tied for 35th with a 99. Trent Mars and Jeremy Penix placed 62nd and 80th at State with rounds of 104 and 115 for Centralia. A trio of Washington County Tigers were in action as Kobe Hoover (102), Pepe Cardenas (114) and Connor Linenberger (124) posted finishes of tied for 51st, 78th and tied for 87th. Hanover Wildcats had Dawson Sedlacek (101) and Zachary Bruna (109) compete at State earning finishes of tied for 46th and tied for 65th. Onaga Buffalo, Thomas Kaberline shot a 112 to tie for 75th. 

The State competition was in Emporia for Class 4A and Jeff West Tiger, Preston Stanley led the area performances as he tied for 21st out of 104 golfers finishing with a 77. Holton Wildcat, AJ Haussler and Nathan Sowers of Atchison were both in action also and notched finishes of tied for 35th with an 81 and tied for 51st with an 84. Marysville Bulldogs competed at the 4A State tournament as a team posting a 359 team score to finish 12th. Leading Marysville was Jackson Rader tho tied for 28th with a 79, while Tyler Rader tied for 45th with an 83. Brant Kieffer (91), Jason Arntt (99), Alex Arntt (99) and Tabitha Wright (108) posted finishes of tied for 91st, tied for 94th, tied for 94th and 103rd. 

At the Class 2A State competition in Pittsburg a pair of Valley Heights golfers were in action as Bryan Yungeberg and Brady Trimble posted rounds of 97 and 114 to tie for 43rd and tie for 72nd.
