B&B and Axtell Split Early Season Non-League Games
By Mike Smith

These two teams are quite familiar with each other as they play in the Twin Valley League every year but they meet up on the court early this season as part of the Falcons Classic in a non-league game and it was a split between the B&B Falcons and the Axtell Eagles.

The Lady Falcons came out on top of the Lady Eagles winning it 45-32 to remain upbeaten on the season. It was a tale of two runs that really controlled the game as the Lady Falcons started off the contest with a 9-0 run and opened the second half with another run to stretch their 19-13 lead out. Axtell did make a run to get the game close and it didn't really get to a consistent double figure lead for B&B until the third quarter.

For B&B they were lead by a pair of juniors on the night as Laura Sudbeck posted 14 points and 18 rebounds, while Katie Huerter chipped in 12 points of her own. Laura's performance for the Lady Falcons earned her a Community National Bank of Seneca and Sabetha "Player to Bank On" award. For Axtell they have a handful of seniors returning but it was two freshman leading they way on the night as a pair guards tabbed double figures. Courtney Heinen and Kriesten Talbot notched 12 and 11 points in the loss as they Lady Eagles are trying to find themselves early this season under new Head Coach, Fred Feldkamp.

In the boys game its a tale of two different squads with experience as B&B brings back some experience but not much, while Axtell is loaded with experience and it was showcased against the Falcons, as the Eagles registered the 43-36 win.

It was a tight ball game back and forth throughout as the Falcons lead it 12-9 after the end of the first quarter but then Axtell lead it the rest of the way, outside of the 30-30 tie going into the fourth quarter. Hot shooting by Eagle senior, Aaron Schmelzle is what gave Axtell the lead in the second quarter as he hit his first four three pointer's on the night. Schmelzle cooled off to finish the game with 14 points but the Eagle backcourt picked things up in the second half with juniors, Derek Porting and Christian Buessing and senior, Bern transfer, Taylor Platt picked up their scoring and took control of the game. Porting finished with eight points, Buessing with six and Platt with seven but it was their feisty defense forcing B&B in to multiple turnovers before the Falcons could set up their halfcourt offense. Junior, Payton Heinen added six points and 12 rebounds on the night for the Eagles, also.

For B&B they struggled somewhat and got frustrated but kept the game close just couldn't seem to get over the hump after falling behind. Junior, Dustin Rottinghaus and sophomore, Trent Schulte lead the way for the Falcons with eight points each, both hitting a pair of three pointers on the night.

For Axtell they seem to have a solid all around and look to be primed to make noise in the Twin Valley League, while B&B early on this season is looking for key players to step up but with the athleticism they have will make them a tough team.
