MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State built a double-digit lead early in the second half and then held off a late charge from Idaho State on Friday night, as the Wildcats won its season-opener at Bramlage Coliseum, 62-54. K-State has now won 12 of its last 14 season openers.

Leading the way for K-State on Friday night was senior guard Brittany Chambers. The All-America candidate registered a double-double with an efficient game-high of 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including a 5-of-8 effort from beyond the arc, and 10 rebounds. She also chipped in with three assists and two steals.

Aiding the K-State cause were sophomore guards Haley Texada and Ashia Woods. Texada, the second-year player from Frisco, Texas, registered a career-high 11 points off the bench and also dished out three assists. Woods hauled in a career-high 13 rebounds and picked up a career-best five steals to go with eight points.

With the help of a quick six points off the bench from Texada, K-State climbed out to an 18-13 lead with 11:10 to play in the opening half. The Bengals regrouped and held the Wildcats scoreless for the next six minutes and captured a 20-18 lead. Chambers ended the K-State drought with her second 3-point field goal of the half to push K-State back in front, 21-20, with 5:23 remaining.

The teams traded the lead twice before the end of the first half, as Ashleigh Vella scored on a driving layup for Idaho State with 1:44 to play in the 1st half for a 26-25 advantage. After a Woods free throw put K-State into a tie at 26, Texada buried a deep three to give K-State a 29-26 halftime lead.

K-State charged out of the locker room after the half and used a 10-0 run to open the first four minutes of the second stanza. Woods tallied four of the points during the run, which built K-State’s lead to 39-26.

Chambers then took control of the game, scoring eight straight points for K-State, including two long three-point field goals, to give the Wildcats a 53-40 advantage with 9:20 to play.

A late 7-0 run by the Bengals narrowed the contest to seven, 61-54, with under a minute to play. Chambers halted the scoreless stretch with a free throw to provide the final margin.

K-State finished the night 10-of-27 from beyond the arc and 23-of-56 from the field.

Kansas State will conclude its two-game season-opening homestand on Sunday afternoon against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon’s game will be broadcast on FOX College Sports Pacific, K-StateHD.TV and on the radio through the K-State Sports Network.
