In the playoffs for the first time since 2008 after winning the District and the Axtell Eagles didn't disappoint their fans on Tuesday night as they flew on in the playoffs behind a 78-28 win over Sylvan-Lucas Unified.

Axtell wasted little time getting on the board as Shane Talbot scampered into the endzone for a 16-yard touchdown with 10:37 to go in the first quarter and behind the two-point conversion it was 8-0. Tyler Jones and Colton Buessing got into the scoring game as each added rushing touchdowns in the first quarter scoring on nine-yard and 13-yard runs, respectively, making it 22-0 before Sylvan-Lucas could finally break through.

Sylvan-Lucas final got on the board with 4:48 left in the first quarter on a 26-yard touchdown pass, but the Eagles matched that just a little over one-minute and forty seconds later with a three-yard touchdown run by Jones and Buessing added a nine-yard touchdown run before the first quarter was over and it was all Eagles 36-6 after just one frame.

Eagles added two more scores before halftime as Buessing took to the air to find Shane Talbot for a 52-yard touchdown pass and Talbot added a 23-yard touchdown run, also. Sylvan-Lucas got another score before the half sandwiched between Axtell's two second quarter scores making it 50-12 at the half.

In the second half Axtell struck first with Talbot running wild again this time for a 12-yard touchdown, but Sylvan-Lucas closed the gap slightly scoring two-straight touchdowns in the third quarter on runs of 34 and 14-yards, making it 56-28. Axtell would answer to end the game with two more rushing scores as Jones and Talbot each posted another score with two and five-yard runs, for the final margin 78-28.

Talbot paced the Eagles in the win rushing for 181 yards on 18 carries with five touchdowns, while Jones added 60 yards on nine carries with three scores. Buessing had a pair of rushing TDs with 82 yards on nine carries and was 13-21 for 199 yards and a score with two interceptions. The game did feature five turnovers between the two teams.

The win pushes Axtell to 8-2 on the season and keeps their season moving on into the Regional round of the 8-Man Division II playoffs, as they gear up for action on Saturday when they host the #1 8-Man DII team in the State, Chetopa (10-0) at 4:00pm.
