For the first time since 2005 the Axtell Eagles made the State volleyball tournament and just like in 2005 the lady Eagles claimed a third place showing at State.

Axtell, the six seed, opened the State tournament in pool play taking on the three seed, St. Johns/Tipton. The nerves showed early for the Eagles and they trailed in set one, making a late push to make it close but fell in set one. After that things fell into place for the Eagles as they took their first lead in set two and worked up to a 20-15 lead, before finishing the set off and then started set three in a blistering hot fashion leading 10-3 early and cruised to the set win, claiming the three set win 22-25, 25-20, 25-13 to open pool play.

The Eagles used that success against St. Johns/Tipton to finish off pool play with two more wins taking down Logan and Argonia both in straight sets. In the second pool play match up Axtell got behind early to Logan and trailed then entire set until putting together multiple late runs, to ultimately tie set one at 23-23 and then fend off set point by Logan twice, only to gain the lead at 26-25 and then grab the set one win. In set two Axtell started fast leading 10-5 and using that advantage claimed the straight set win, 27-25, 25-16 over Logan.

Wrapping up pool play, Axtell cruised past Argonia in straight sets, 25-13, 25-18 to finish pool play 3-0 to win the pool. Multiple service aces were registered by the Eagles in both sets helping them earn the win.

Moving into the Semifinals the Eagles faced the runner-ups in the other pool the Sharon Springs-Wallace County the number one seed in the tournament. Wallace County pushed out to a lead at 16-11 forcing an Axtell timeout the Eagles tried to claw back into the set, but ultimately Wallace County claimed set one. Axtell was not going down quietly as the Eagles battled back to earn the set two win battling from behind to take the lead at 18-17 and then go on to grab the set win, forcing a third set. In the third set the teams traded points late after Axtell had a firm lead early but Wallace County took the lead late to win in three sets over Axtell 16-25, 25-22, 21-25.

The lost set Axtell into the third place competition were they squared off against Fowler and put the Semifinal loss behind them to hit a groove again and worked past Fowler, 25-16, 25-18 in straight sets to claim third place.

With a 4-1 showing at the State tournament the Axtell Eagles brought home the third place hardware for the trophy case and finish the season 28-16, with their third place finish in Class 1A-DII.
