Horton Uses a Strong Defensive Effort to Remain Undefeated
By Jonny Kane

It was a battle of the Chargers in Winchester, Kansas on Friday night, but it was Horton that obtained an early lead and sustained it throughout to cruise to a big 44-0 win over Jefferson County North.

It was the first home game for Jefferson County North because of a new track and concession stand being put into place and the Chargers in green came out clicking on all cylinders on the first drive of the ballgame. Junior quarterback Bryce Noll came out on fire for JCN as he completed four out of his first five passes to move the football all the way into the Horton red zone, but a crucial fourth down stop by the Horton defense forced possession to change hands giving Horton their first offensive drive of the night.

Horton used a solid rushing attack on their first drive of the game led by junior Derek Richardson to easily move the football down the field inside the JCN 10-yard line. Quarterback Derrick Stone then handed it off to Christian White and from six yards out the sophomore walked into the endzone for the first points of ballgame capped off by a Trey Dishon extra point to give Horton a 7-0 lead early in the contest.

The next big play of the game came on the defensive side of the ball for Horton as Spencer DeLosSantos picked off Noll to give the senior his sixth interception of the season to set the offense up in great field position. Once again it was a heavy dosage of Derek Richardson and on his eighth carry of the ballgame he was able to find the endzone from five yards out to put Horton up two scores heading into the second quarter.

On the next drive for JCN it would be the Horton defense coming up with another interception this time Derrick Stone came up with pick and was able to take it 35 yards for the score and the extra point by Dishon gave Horton the 21-0 lead early into the second quarter. The Jefferson County North offense just wasn't able to get anything going on the evening and quickly went three-and-out on their next possession giving Horton another great chance to score and they would take full advantage as Stone was able to punch it in from ten yards out to put the game out of reach. Horton would then tack on a 30-yard field goal by Dishon just before the half to give them a 30-0 lead heading into the break.

The Chargers in blue would score just two more times in the second half on runs by Richardson and White which proved to be more than enough for Horton allowing them to come away with the big 44-0 win.

In the win for Horton, junior Derek Richardson carried the load on his shoulders for the offense racking up 162 yard on 18 carries and had two scores on the evening. The Charger defense also had a big evening as they were able to rack up four interceptions with two coming from senior Derrick Stone which seamed to set the offense up with great field position throughout the evening. Horton moved to 3-0 on the year with the win and will now host Pleasant Ridge next week in a Northeast Kansas League battle.

For Jefferson County North it was a tough night for junior quarterback Bryce Noll as he went 13-24 for 148 yard and 4 interceptions. JCN only ran the ball eight times and just weren't able to get anything going against a tough Horton defense. JCN is still searching for their first win of 2014 and will be at home next week for a non-league matchup against a tough Troy squad.
