Highland CC Athletics Weekend Recap (Sept. 5th & 6th) -- Football, Volleyball & Cross Country

All the fall sports at Highland Community College were in action over the past weekend, as football picked up their first win of the season, volleyball hosted a tournament and both the men's and women's cross country team competed in events.

Highland Football Downs Benedictine JV on the Road for First Win of the Season

It was all Highland CC on Saturday in Atchison as they established an early lead and cruised past Benedictine JV squad 42-7. Scotties put up 14 in each of the first three quarters of the game and Benedictine got their lone score of the matchup in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore quarterback, Kyle Todd paced the Scotties with only five incompletions on the day going 21-26 for 200 yards and a TD and ran for a score on four carries for 38 yards. Isaiah Ming posted 44 yards on 14 carries and a TD, while Cedrix Reed also had a score on the ground. In the air, Austin Moses caught five passes for 51 yards, while Bob Pugh caught the lone passing TD for the Scotties.

While, Highland posted 424 total yards of offense the Scotties opponents were held to just 169 total yards and had three turnovers. Scotties defense was led by Willie Flemming who registered 10 tackles, while Sabetha native, Levi Huneke posted eight tackles and a half sack on the day.

With the win the Scotties improved to 1-1 on the season and turn their attention Iowa Western who comes to Highland on Saturday, September 13th with kickoff set at 1:00pm.

Highland Volleyball Hosts HCC Invitational

Highland played host to several teams on this past Friday and Saturday as part of the HCC Invitational and went 1-4 in action falling in a pair of matches on Friday and split two matches on Saturday.

On Friday the Scotties suffered losses to Longview and Indian Hills CC as part of the HCC Invitational. Highland fell in four sets against Longview, falling in the second, third and fourth set after winning the first set (20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-13). Leah Rader led the Scotties with nine kills, while Centralia native, Kaitlyn Koch had eight kills and four service aces. Ashton Dorr finished the match with 33 assists and Megan Lockwood registered 20 digs. Against Indian Hills the Scotties fell in three straight sets 25-17, 25-19, 25-19. The trio of Rader, Koch and Briley Ware all had six kills in the loss, while Dorr finished with 15 assists in the matchup. 

On Saturday the Scotties would pick up their lone win of their tournament as they beat Southwestern CC in four sets 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-13. Koch paced the team with 13 kills in the win, while Ware added 12 kills and 10 digs. Georgia Gunter lead the team in digs with 20, while Dorr posted 36 assists in the win. Overall on Saturday the Scotties spilt two matches falling in their other contest to Cloud County CC in three straight sets (25-10, 25-22, 25-17). Koch again led the team in kills with eight in the match, while Dorr had 19 assists and seven digs.

With the 1-3 performance in the HCC Invitational the Scotties are now 4-7 on the season and turn their attention back to KJCCC play on Wednesday as they travel to Parsons, KS to face Labette CC at 5:30pm.

Highland Men's Cross Country Team Competes at NWMSU Bearcat Open (Full Results)

Scotties took to the course for their third competition of the year and competed in the Bearcat Open at Northwest Missouri State University back on Friday.

Three Scotties notched Top 20 finishes on the day with Brian Martinez leading the way placing 13th behind a time of 27:42.9. While, Ronnie Carroll finished 15th (27:55.8) and Rey Quinones-Velez notched a 20th place finish (28:08.1).

Five more Highland runners finished in the Top 40 of the competition: Fernando Lucero 25th (28:44.7), Corey Scott 27th (28:59.9), Christian Salazar 31st (29:15.6), Derrick Zaldivar 36th (29:33.8) and Carlos Gonzalez-Tabare 37th (29:37.7).

While, four other runners also competed for Highland - Coner Reed (42nd - 30:03.5), Quinton Phillips (52nd - 31:08.8), Carlos Pino (32:01.4) and Adrian Sias (6th - 33:18.1).

Highland men take to the course again Saturday, September 20th at the William Greeno Classic in Lincoln, NE at Pioneers Park at 10:45 a.m.

Highland Women's Cross Country Team Competes at Maple Leaf Invitational (Full Results)

The Highland women's cross country team got their season underway over the weekend as they competed in the Maple Leaf Invitational in Baldwin City, KS hosted by Baker University.

Three top 30 finishers, headlined the day for Highland as Kalli Morelanf paced the way finished 23rd (17:09.49), while Courtney Armon (17:17.19) and Jennifer Hall (17:18.39) finished 25th and 26th, respectively.

Two other runners competed for the Scotties as Skylie Hughes placed 42nd (19:00.93) and Syvannah Williams finished 50th (20:07.41).

The lady Scotties take to the course again on Saturday, September 13th in Emporia at Emporia State University.
