Doniphan County, Sabetha, Seneca & Atchison All Still Alive in Legion Zone Tournament Play

Action at Somerset Park continued on Wednesday evening in the Zone 5 AA legion baseball tournament, as Doniphan County stayed alive with a 4-1 win over Marysville and Sabetha topped Seneca 8-5 to move the Raptors one win shy of winning Zone.

The night started off with Doniphan County bouncing back from their loss to Sabetha to dispatch Marysville, ending Post 163's season behind a 4-1 final. The scoring opened in the second inning as Doniphan County in the top of the second took the 2-0 lead behind three hits and two Marysville errors. Doniphan County added two more in the third on another Marysville error, single and walk, making it 4-0. Marysville had their opportunities throughout the game with nine free passes but only could manage one run, coming in the bottom of the seventh.

Doniphan County put up nine hits and took advantage of six Marysville errors, also to score their four runs and earn the win. Nathan Gaarder paced the offense with a 3-4 night with two RBI's earning McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on Kanzaland radio. While, Reid Greaser and Cody Israel each were 2-4 on the night, as Israel had two runs scored. Jeffery Watts earned the win on the mound improving his record to 7-0, has he gave up one run on three hits, eight walks and a hit batter and struck out three. The win moved Doniphan County to 22-8 on the season.

Marysville in the loss had hits from CJ Becker, Broderick Stohs and Brock Watts, while Trey Loshe took the loss going the distance giving up four runs on nine hits, two walks and stuck out one. With the loss Marysville's season comes to a close with a 16-10 record.

In the night cap, Sabetha and Seneca were looking to move one win shy of claiming the Zone tournament title with a win and it was Sabetha capitalizing on walks yet again to claim the 8-5 win.

The Sabetha Raptors opened up the scoring notching five runs in the second behind four walks and two hits. Seneca chipped away at the lead getting a run in the second and third and then tied the game in the fifth with three runs making it 5-5. After Seneca tied the game Sabetha answered quickly scoring three runs in the top of the sixth on two walks, a hit and two sacrifices’, giving the Raptors the 8-5 lead, which they held onto for the win.

For the second straight game Sabetha only mustered four hits but drew 11 walks and took advantage of them to score eight runs. Keegan Schumann led the offense with a 2-4 night with three RBI's and a run scored earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on Kanzaland radio. Dustin Boeckman and Gaven Schumann notched the other two Sabetha hits on the night. While, it was Tyler Hackney in two and one-third innings of relief earning the win on the mound, while Taylor Bauman picked up his second save of the Zone tournament getting the final two-outs. The win was Sabetha's 25th on the season as the improved to 25-15 on the year.

Seneca in the loss was led by Devin Henry who was 2-4 with two runs scored and took the loss on the mound going five innings giving up seven runs on three hits, 11 walks and struck out four. Alex Rottinghaus, Evan Hermesch, Justice McKernan and Dalton Hiltbrand each had a hit for Seneca in the loss, as they fell to 13-7 on the season.

Three teams remain alive in the Zone 5 AA legion tournament, as Doniphan County and Seneca will face off Thursday, July 24th in an elimination game and the winner will play Sabetha on Friday for the Zone championship. (If Doniphan County beats Seneca Sabetha will qualify for the State tournament automatically as Doniphan County as the State host will already be in the State tournament)

Atchison Stays Alive in AAA Zone Tournament at Emporia

Postseason play started for Atchison last night as they opened Zone play at the AAA level in the NE Zone hosted by Emporia. Atchison took the field against Emporia in their opening round game and the contest need extra innings to decide the winner, as Emporia claimed the 4-1 win in 10 innings in regular nine inning game.

Emporia scored first in the top of the second to take the 1-0 lead but Atchison tied the game with their lone run in the bottom of the third making 1-1. The game went to extras and in the top of the 10th Emporia posted three runs and went on to win 4-1. Tanner Huntington took the tough loss pitching into the tenth inning and recording nine strikeouts on the night, whlie Brian Scott helped the offense with a pair of hits. Leavenworth won their first round game over Osawatomie 9-3.

With the loss that meant Atchison's night was not done as they had to stave off elimination from Zone playing Osawatomie in an elimination game. The A's picked up the 11-0 win in seven innings, using a seven run seventh to end the contest via run-rule. Chase Behler paced the A's on the mound pitching six of the seven innings and recording 12 strikeouts.

Atchison continues Zone tournament action Thursday, July 24th night at 7:45pm playing the loser of the Leavenworth and Emporia game in another elimination game. With a win Atchison would earn a spot in the AAA State tournament in Pittsburg, as the top two teams from each AAA Zone make State.

Doniphan County Junior Legion Opens Up Single A State Tournament with a Win

After winning their Zone the Doniphan County Junior legion team turned their attention to the the Single A State tournament in Leavenworth last night and opened up State play with a first round win topping Manhattan 11-10.

Doniphan County held a 10-5 advantage in the fifth inning but ultimately needed another run, to secure the win as Manhattan made a comeback.

In the other first round games of the Junior legion State tournament: Paola beat Geiger Ready-Mix 9-4, Salina Eagles topped Dodge City 10-5 and Andover Central came from behind to beat McPherson 8-3.

With the win Doniphan County continues in the winner's bracket and plays Paola Thursday, July 24th night at 8:30pm.

Update on All AA Zone Tournaments

Zone 2 and Zone 4 have their winners as the hosts for each of those Zone's earned spots in the State tournament. Larned won Zone 2 and will play the representative from Zone 5 (Sabetha or Seneca) in the first round of State. While, Silver Lake won the Zone 4 title with a 7-3 win over Rock Creek on Wednesday night, earning a spot at State.
